Saturday, Nov 2 Match Day!
Updates: The 2024 NPI Rankings have been updated.
St Thomas up 2-0. Live Stats not working. Sigh.
UST and Austin with the sweeps. UCSC takes down HSU in 4-sets.
Watched a bit of the Juniata/Scranton match. Geez. Too easy. The serving game of JC is just crazy good. Everything is tough. You’d think the best way to attack JC is when Foley (a bit undersized) is on the front row. She seemed to touch everything hit across from her. I will say that I think it’s funny that they have a mic near the net to catch the sound of the hits but then they turn it off when Scranton is hitting. I mean…that’s what they’re doing, right?
The Trinity (CT) dream should be dead now. Let’s not forgot how close they were to an at-large with that SOS. (0.507 last time calculated.)
ONU took the loss to John Carroll. That is going to hurt. This takes them to 59.86 (give or take). You do not want to be in the 59s when the music stops. Some will make it and some will not.
Johns Hopkins doing harm to Swarthmore’s at-large chances.
St Thomas/UMHB starting up now…a bit late.
Chapman had been on a bit of a roll but they just dropped set one to Caltech after struggling a bit with Oxy. UHMB/UST tied 1-1. Austin up 1-0 on HPU.
Emily Sitton just smashed a ball for ETBU. No idea who she is but it looks like Raylynn Pitts must be hurt as she is her replacement. Nice problem to have when you have that arm on the bench all season. (Narrator: Pitts is also playing.)
Caltech up 2-0 on Chapman. Crushing loss if the Panthers don’t come back.
ETBU with an easy set one win (25-14). I don’t think this will go long, unfortunately. ETBU playing really well and are the better team. SU making way too many errors.
Chapman wins the third but Caltech up late in the fourth. Nice that both teams are wearing identical uniforms. UMHB won 3-1 over St Thomas.
17-9 SU but ETBU has won the next 8 straight and have tied it. Unfortunate scene as Emily Marks tripped over another player and hit her face. She has come out of the match.
25-21 SU…all tied up 1-1. My negative attitude seems to be working. SU has no chance. ETBU is too strong.
Wow. Caltech beats Chapman 3-1. Not sure if Chapman had injuries or what. Chapman had a leg up for the final tournament spot but that puts it back in play. Nicely done Beavers. Alize Bakker with 20 kills.
In that second set for ETBU/SU, ETBU hit zero. Both team had the same number of kills but ETBU made more errors.
25-16 ETBU and they lead 2-1. ETBU hit 0.414 in set one and 0.395 in set three. Not beating a team hitting at those levels.
ETBU hit 0.364 in the fourth and win 3-1. When they were on they were dominate. I believe that will drop SU out of the at-large but there have been some other losses that could impact things. Reid and Mosley combined for 35 kills. SU had 38 kills as a team.
CMS up 2-0 and La Verne up 1-0. UCSC up 1-0.
Dinner! Remember, it’s daylight savings tonight. Enjoy that extra hour.
Chris Newport lost to Marymount! A 48 NPI versus a 63 NPI. Biggest NPI upset of the year, I believe. CNU is still safe at around 62.10.
CMS and La Verne with the sweep. Dani Beder (CMS) had 12 kills and hit 0.706.
I think NPI is telling us not to schedule big matches at the end of the season. Play teams you can beat.
LETU/UCSC are in a 5th set.
LETU gets the win. UCSC doesn’t sweep Texas.
Nothing surprising going on in the late matches.
Whitman is about to close out L&C and they are the last match. Oxy did win one set from CLU.
Whitman does get the win. Couldn’t figure out how to get my volume working for that stream.
One match tomorrow. We will see some NPI changes. Update tomorrow.
Here are the High NPI matches (55+ vs 55+) tonight:
Region X Matches:
Random Thoughts: Nervous about this schedule because I was rushed so did I miss anything?
The ASC, St Thomas and UCSC finish up their tournament down in Houston today. Let’s see if Texas can do something in a battle against someone named Cruz. There had to be a Cruz at the Alamo, right? Shouldn’t we remember that or something?
Austin College hosts a few teams at their place again today. I had forgotten that they don’t use FloSports. All free streams there.
ETBU heads down to Southwestern in a game that means nothing for them but may mean whether Southwestern gets an at-large or not. A loss here probably means SU needs to win their AQ.
CMS and La Verne just came down from an emotional match. CMS gets Redlands at home while La Verne has to drive over to Pomona-Pitzer. Both teams better focus or they could be in trouble.
The NWC seems to just be running out the string. Lewis & Clark will go for their first conference win against Whitman. Whitworth/Willamette should be a pretty good game. GFU at Puget Sound will also be good.
Looking at the High NPI matches…
I wonder what Scranton would move to with a win over Juniata? I’ll have to do the math today. Does it take them from 56.38 to the at-large window?
Oshkosh/Chicago is a big deal for both. Oshkosh wants to stay in the Top 8. Chicago wants to stay in the at-large window.
UWSP/Chicago is a huge at-large match for both. UWSP is close to the cut line. Should be interesting.
Swarthmore/JHU is another “what-if” game. Swarthmore is so close to that cut line. A win here locks them up an at-large, I betcha.
