Saturday, August 31 Match Day

Aug 30, 2019
7 min read

Updates: I’ll update through out the day. Initial thoughts are at the bottom of this post.

Centenary hasn’t updated their results from yesterday. That’s just wrong.

I can’t tell you how Whittier looked against Carthage but the deals at the Lucky outlet are really good. I’m going to assume the Poets should have won but Carthage cheated.

UTD up 2-0 on Stevens Point. Cal Lu struggling with Platteville. Now down 2-0. Big comeback needed.

HUGE WIN FOR UT DALLAS!

Carthage with the 25-18 first set win. One big run doomed the Pirates.

Cal Lu is swept by Platteville. Ugh.

Carthage takes the second set 25-19. No big runs, but Carthage is just too good in a lot of areas. Fun to watch.

Carthage with the sweep. 25-22 third set. SU is going to be really good. Carthage already is.

UMHB is beat by St. Ben in 4-sets. Not a good result for the Cru or the West.

St Thomas (TX) with their first DIII win. 5-sets over Le Tourneau.

Augsburg takes the first set over CMS. Not our best weekend for the West so far. CMS takes the second set and UTD leads Chicago 1-0. Things looking up.

Check that, Augsburg takes the third set.

Watching CMS while watching HSU/Whittier. All tied at 2-2.

UTD drops the second set. Close games.

CMS down 11-14 storms back to tie it before losing 16-14. Madsen with the triple-double. Rough loss. I didn’t see Moore playing so more on that.

Top 3 West teams all lost at least one match this weekend.

Pomona-Pitzer with the sweep. Well, after they dropped the first two sets.

Puget Sound having trouble with Wheaton. Down 2-1 but they did win the third set. Loggers take the 4th. Going 5!

Whitworth/HSU In a dogfight. Going to a fifth-set. I will say there’s not much separating HSU, Whittier and Whitworth.

Whittier 8-6 on the turn.

Puget Sound losses the fifth set. Not sure about that out call on match point.

Whittier holds off HSU 15-9. Whoops…HSU won. And I was watching it. What is wrong with me?

McMurry/TLU first set went 34-32. #FreeVolleyball

St Thomas (TX) is a lot better than I thought they would be. Good sign for the SCAC.

Whitworth just served Southwestern off the court in set 1. 25-14. Buckle up.

Whitworth up 2-0. They have really kicked it up a notch.

SU hits negative for the match and Whitworth gets the sweep.

Alright…had a dinner break. Let’s start updating.

I was really looking forward to seeing the PLU / Puget Sound match. It doesn’t count towards conference but it’s an indicator if Puget Sound is ready for the next step. Well, for tonight, the Lutes said, “no”. Sweep for PLU.

CMS takes down a very good St. Olaf team 3-1.

Tough weekend for Dallas in California. Played a number of really good teams but still disappointing that they didn’t get at least one win.

Is Pomona-Pitzer the only SCIAC team undefeated after the first weekend? I think they are. They won the matches in front of them and I’m interested to see them next week at UT-Dallas.

Trinity is the big winner in the West Region this weekend. They are 4-0 and they played good competition. The UMHB win was also very important regionally.

Pacific Lutheran may not be dead, yet. Went 4-0 on the weekend.

Nationally Juniata swept UW-Eau Claire and Wittenberg took down Ohio Northern. Gustavus Adolphus swept Aurora (who only won 1 match this weekend). Berry completed a good weekend at the Ithaca tournament as did Hendrix at the WUSTL Tournament. North Park stuns Washington-St. Louis who should probably fall out of the Top 25 this week.

All of the matches in the West Region are done. Just some box scores that still need to get posted. I’ll be doing a West Region Wrap-Up tomorrow (late). What I’m saying is don’t skip church waiting for it. Or lunch. Or dinner. I’ll be a doing a national podcast early next week but I have no idea what I’m doing for that. Being in a gym for two days (for the most part) and seeing the world (and some games) through my phone really limits the big picture for me. I’ll be diving into streams and box scores tomorrow but my first impression is the West Region struggled mightily this weekend. Long-term, we can recover but a number of good opportunities were wasted.

Maybe some additional links will be added but that’s it for the most part. Thanks for checking in!!!

Updating some box scores and see where Allie Freeburg (Colorado College) had 24.5 points in the win against Oshkosh. She had 17 points in the loss to Clarkson yesterday. An example of a player that didn’t have an opportunity but injuries have opened one up and she appears to not want to give it up.

Random Thoughts: As a rule, I write the Saturday Match Day post prior to the matches that weekend. So, if I say something stupid because of what happened yesterday, give me some slack.

UT-Dallas is back in the fire today with two really tough matches. Should be no problem after their sweeps from yesterday. (fingers crossed)

MATCH OF THE DAY is going to be UMHB/Saint Benedict. Another ranked team for the Cru but we can all pull for them as it’s an out-of-region opponent.

Everyone!!!! Send a lot of love out to Belhaven as they take on #8 JWU (RI) today.

Trinity can’t sleep on Minnesota-Morris today. Tough match-up to begin the day regardless of whether they beat or lost to UMHB last night.

Augsburg/CMS will be a fun one. Looking forward to streaming this one at some point.

Lot of important matches in the SCIAC. Chapman, Pomona-Pitzer and Cal Lutheran really need to win out against teams they should probably beat although St. Olaf and Augsburg are tough ones.

Whitworth/Southwestern today. Go Pirates! Whoops.

Trinity/Saint Benedict is another great match-up today. Just a really good tournament down there at Trinity, which you would know if you had listened to my Podcast on it. (Shameless plug.)

Augsburg/Chapman could be vital for the Panthers to get any national love this season.

Pacific Lutheran/Puget Sound in a match that counts but doesn’t really. Another match I hope to stream at some point. Pacific Lutheran is the current NWC title holder and I’m sure they are not going to take kindly to the young Puget Sound team trying to make a name against them.

I haven’t talked about Colorado College but their UW-Oshkosh match might be their toughest of the weekend. The Tigers should win but you can’t overlook the mighty Titans. (Update – This comment didn’t age well as the Tigers lost yesterday.)

Once again I’ll be down at Southwestern today. Tall, goofy and wearing a yellow hat. Say hello, I dare you.
