Road Kill (2019)

Director: Soo Sung Lee
Starring: Shin Won Ho, Oh Kwang-rok, Cheol-min Lee
Ogwang, a real estate agent is on his way to the countryside for real property development. His journey becomes more and more strange, and eventually leads to accidents. And after a while, he meet Chang’s family and each family member looks very familiar to him. Jang’s family seems to be kind and saved him from the accident…but later turns into serious misery to him.
‘Road Kill’ is yet another perfect example why I love Korean cinema so much: it is completely unpredictable!
Oh-Gwang is an arrogant big shot developer, but life takes an unexpected turn after a freak accident. The film is mysterious from the onset, and the mystery lingers well into the final act. The viewer never really understands what is actually going on until everything is revealed.
After the accident, Oh-Gwang finds himself in the care of a somewhat dysfunctional family, and soon becomes a victim of his own actions – not necessarily circumstance. Despite what he was going through, I never really felt sorry for him due to his selfish nature and self-indulgent tendencies. I sympathized with the caring family instead.
Typical of Korean movies, there’s a shocking twist I never saw coming. This twist makes the film an absolute masterpiece. It is a very clever script well executed. The director treated this interesting concept with the utmost of care and detail. Once everything makes perfect sense, you realize just how powerful the underlying message is. It really does make you think long after the credits rolled. This was awesome!
This film deserves more than one viewing. The second time around you’re sure to take note of all the small details.
In Korean.
Would I watch it again? Yes, definitely.
