Retired? Shop at Costco!
7 Benefits of Shopping at Costco for Retired Individuals
People of all ages, family sizes, etc. can shop at Costco. However, I think most people tend to associate it with families with kids who will make use of the larger quantities. It is not typically thought of as the ideal store for older individuals who likely no longer have children at home. However, this article highlights several benefits of membership for retired individuals without endless disposable income.
1. Bulk Buying Reduces Costs
Costco’s bulk buying options offer retirees the opportunity to purchase larger quantities of goods at lower unit prices. This is particularly cost-effective for non-perishable items or products with a long shelf life, as it reduces the frequency of purchases and the overall expenditure on essentials.
For years, my mom and uncle have filled my grandmother’s front closet with nonperishable items from Costco, including paper goods, bottled water, and Keurig pods. The good prices on large quantities save her money and the time and effort of having to buy and carry them each time she runs out. They tend to buy less food, except for items that can be frozen (e.g., salmon; (Product Review: Kirkland frozen Atlantic salmon)) or that last a long time (e.g. mixed nuts; (Product Review: Kirkland Signature Extra Fancy Unsalted Mixed Nuts)). In addition, my parents, although only one is retired, buy a lot of their food (both perishable and nonperishable) at Costco. In addition to buying bananas, tomatoes (Product review: grape tomatoes), milk, yogurt (Product Review: Fage 2% Plain Greek Yogurt), potatoes (Product Review: Russet Potatoes), lox (Product Review:Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon), salad greens, and pineapple (or watermelon when in season; (Product Review: Watermelons)) almost weekly, they buy and store waffles, coffee, and a few other items. They also load up on paper goods and bathroom essentials. They save a lot on these items and are reassured that they always have these items in the house.
2. Access to Affordable Medications
Costco’s pharmacy frequently offers medications at prices that are 2% to 40% lower than other retail pharmacies. This range of savings is particularly beneficial for retirees who have regular medication needs, as it can significantly reduce their expenses and ease the strain on their budget.
Medication can be very expensive and, typically as people get older, they take more medications. It is very helpful to be able to save money on medication, especially as much of it is taken long term and therefore needs to be refilled.
3. Free Health Screenings
Many Costco locations offer free health screenings (e.g., diabetes; heart). These screenings enable individuals to save on medical expenses.
I did not know about this service! I did a little research and learned that the pharmacy offers screenings for osteoporosis (ultrasound), heart health (lipid blood test; blood pressure), and diabetes (A1C blood test). Although these tests cannot replace a full medical exam, they may provide initial or additional information .
4. Discounted Gas Prices
Retirees can take advantage of Costco’s discounted gas prices, which are often lower than those at standard gas stations.
I have written about the gas before (Got gas?)
5. Affordable Eyewear and Hearing Aids
Costco has good prices on eyewear and hearing aids. The article mentions that, because elderly individuals often have increasing difficulties with It vision and hearing, saving money for aids can be very helpful.
I have written before about the optical department (Costco optical:my experience); (Costco Optical: Updated from recent experience)), I don’t know much about the hearing aids, but I have heard they are great deals.
6. Low-Cost Organic and Healthy Food Options
The article points out that many retired individuals may focus on a healthy diet. Therefore, they can save money by buying organic and healthy items at Costco.
I think that Costco is of mixed benefit regarding healthy food for retired people. There are certainly a lot of healthy options. However, many of these options are fresh and therefore likely too large for a few people to eat before they go bad.
7. Exclusive Member Deals and Discounts
The author mentions that membership entitles individuals to save on a variety of services and deals. For example, they can use the membership for travel and insurance savings. The membership is beneficial for retired people to save on things ranging from trips to essential needs.
It is helpful to remember the savings that are not necessarily found in the store (e.g., travel packages). I’d also add that they can save on gift cards (Good deals on gift cards) to save money on outings, and appliances that may provide them with additional activities to use at home when no longer working.
Are you retired? Do you think you will shop at Costco after you retire? Any other benefits you can think of?
