Remission

I guess I won’t bury the lead in this article. For those following my cancer fight, my scan results are in and I finished my meeting with my doctor and I’m in remission. With every good news, however, there is always the bad (which won’t overshadow the good in this case).

My MRIs were clean except for signs of old age. My PET Scan showed that the cancer was gone although I still had a mass. Based on the PET, I’m in remission. If they went by the size of the mass, however, that wouldn’t be the case. My doctor believes due to the amount of cancer I had that the mass will take time to reduce and that it’s basically scar tissue. So now worries and everything was going great in the meeting until…

I asked about the brain. I had cancer in the central nervous system, which was cleared pretty quickly, but it exposed the brain. For those following the cancer fight blog, you know that I was getting spinal taps to inject chemo to clear the spinal fluid and also try to get chemo to the brain. The problem is that the brain is a tough organ to get chemo to and it’s a great spot for cancer to hide. I have to decide if I want to undergo a couple more chemo treatments that will specifically treat the brain. It will be a year after my last chemo treatment until I’m no longer immune compromised and Covid, at this point, is probably more deadly to me than cancer. So, I ask this from my heart and from no place else; if you haven’t been vaccinated for Covid but are considering it, I ask that you do it for me and people like me. I would love to make it back into a volleyball gym soon.

Anyway, a good day. I’ll update the cancer fight blog shortly with more information for those that want to be bored.
