Regionals Day 2 Match Day

Nov 8, 2018
8 min read

Update:

Predictions are below the schedule.

No yellow hat in St. Peter today. If CMS and PLU both win then another discussion with the boss will occur. I hope to watch a few more matches than yesterday (zero). In-laws are moved in…sort of. I’m sure they can go a day without food.

Just noticed the regional rankings dropped last night. As time permits I’ll be going through this data so look for future posts.

Game Time! Oh, I forgot about the parades.

They needed you Ned. Yikes, Bowdoin.

The Kean / Wesleyan Live Stats were backwards so when I finally went to watch it, there was a surprise. Wesleyan up 2-0 but Kean has set point in the third. Kean gets the set win. Down 2-1.

Emory and RIT with the sweep. Neither really challenged.

The CMS announcer has very little inflection in his voice. Bueller…Bueller…Bueller.

Emory’s Sydney Leimbach had 10 kills with no errors (0.588). RIT Katie Hobler had a monster match with 28 points on 23 kills. That was in 3 sets.

Bowdoin coming back strong. Lead 2-1 after three sets.

CMS with the first set 25-17.

Bethany giving CNU all they can handle. CNU lead 2-1. Not sure I’ve heard a regional match with no announcer.

WUSTL with an easy set one win over Cornell College.

Bowdoin pulls it out after dropping the first set. Win 3-1.

Even Live Stats couldn’t get Kean to win. It got fixed and lo and behold Wesleyan wins 3-1. Mia Hogan with 14 kills for Wesleyan.

CMS takes the second set and lead 2-0. Hitting 0.431 for the match.

CNU’s Katie Piper is good. 18 kills against Bethany. CNU wins 3-1.

Cornell with a great effort but WUSTL lead 2-0 going into the third set.

CMS with the sweep. Melanie Moore with 9 kills and no errors (0.750). Not really close in this one. West Region is currently undefeated in NCAA Tournament play.

Just flipped on the Live Stats for the Thomas More match and it’s going to a fifth set! Of course, they haven’t started playing, yet. More Live Stats drama. It’s not that hard, folks!

W&L putting a spanking on Colorado College right now. Generals hitting 0.500!

Is Berry using modem technology? Video is choppy.

Colorado College tries to come back but W&L with the win. A number of doubles go uncalled in this match. That won’t help Colorado College as their setters are pretty clean. Tigers need to get Spaethling the ball and get her going.

Carnegie Mellon wins the first set. Johns Hopkins with a first set win, too.

I learned my lesson as Live Stats has Maine Maritime leading Springfield…check the video. Yup. JWU has the Live Stats switched again. It’s so easy guys. This is the NCAA Tournament. Springfield leads 1-0 and is leading in the 2nd set.

Thomas More with the first set win.

Rick Swan (CC) is not happy with the officiating. In fairness, he never is. In this case, he’s not wrong. In other news, W&L is pretty good. I haven’t seen them play this year but I know they struggled early in the season.

Colorado College takes the second set but that was really close. W&L not giving up. Jordan Mullen is the X factor for the Tigers. Playing well. Tigers played a 6-2 in the first set and then a 5-1 in the second set.

Johns Hopkins leads Eastern 2-0. Springfield up 2-0.

Morrisville State takes set two 31-29. Tied 1-1 with Carnegie Mellon.

Johns Hopkins with the sweep as they hit 0.309. Springfield also with the sweep. CMU up 2-1.

Thomas More sweep Pitt-Bradford. Julia Popova with 15 kills and no errors (0.833). I guess if you don’t want to be perfect than that will do.

Colorado College take the third set with a late run. Lead 2-1.

UW-Eau Claire with a first set win over St. Thomas. IWU with a big first set win over Cal Lutheran.

Some amazing digs by W&L. Kiera Borthwick just defined physics and frankly she could be a witch.

Cal Lu gets closer but are down 2-0 to IWU. St. Thomas down 2-0 to UW Eau Claire.

W&L win the fourth set 25-23. Going to a fifth set. The Generals are out hitting Colorado College who are struggling against the W&L defense.

Cal Lu gets swept by IWU so a West Region team goes down. Colorado College has their 3rd match point on W&L. Trying to finish.

Not pretty but Colorado College gets the win. Lot of credit to W&L but the Tigers will need to play better tomorrow against Emory.

The string of bad luck for Trinity continues. They haven’t advanced out of the first round since 2014. Kudos to Aurora for the great match.

17 blocks not enough to get PLU through. Great season Lutes!

A #1 goes down in the first round. Gustavus Adolphus is swept by Minnesota-Morris.

I didn’t get to watch the evening matches. West Region went 3-3 on the day. CMS, Colorado College and UMHB all win. All play very tough matches tomorrow.

Random Thoughts:

All eight regions are in action today!

Wittenberg swept DePauw a few weeks back. I think they win here in 4-sets. Whitewater is a tough second round opponent for Calvin. Give me Calvin but an upset wouldn’t surprise me.

In the Chicago Regional I like Washington-St.Louis over Cornell and (unfortunately) IWU over Cal Lutheran. The Regals run hot and cold so they could surprise here and they certainly have the talent. I will be cheering for them! Trinity and Aurora is a tough call. Trinity beat Aurora earlier in the season but that was at home and Aurora will have the crowd this time. Still, I think Trinity should be able to overpower Aurora and shake off their first round disappointments from the last two years. I think Chicago rolls over Dubuque in the nightcap.

In the Ithaca Regional I listed RIT as the third seed because I saw that in their regional website. They were announced as the #2 seed based on their positioning in the bracket. These teams actually played a 5-setter earlier in the year at RIT. I think RIT takes this one, too. Carnegie Mellon has a real chance to make it to the Elite 8 but can’t be looking past Morrisville State. They should win this in a sweep. Give me Stevenson over Hunter and Ithaca over Southern Vermont.

In the Juniata Regional I like CNU over Bethany in the first match. Thomas More is a team that has a chance to win it all so I’ll take them against Pittsburgh-Bradford. In the Battle of the Mary’s, give me Mary Washington. Marymount actually took a 4-set victory off of the Eagles but that was in September and UMW really turned it around in October. Regardless, this will be a close one. Juniata over Notre Dame is an easy call. Maybe the least competitive matches of all the first rounds?

The Gustavus Adolphus Regional is the deepest from 1 to 8. All of the lower ranked teams have a chance in this one. CMS draws Augsburg and they should win this one. Make no mistake, if CMS is going to advance in this tournament they are going to have to fight for every thing as they are not as talented as last year’s squad (just like LeBron is not as talented as last year, either). With that said, if you get a knife into them you’d better twist it because they will fight until the end. (That may have been too graphic…younger kids don’t read that last part.) I love St. Thomas but UW-Eau Claire is another team that could win this whole thing. Saint Benedict and Pacific Lutheran will be a good one. My heart says Lutes but my money is on the Bennies. Prove me wrong! Gustavus Adolphus should beat Morris but this is also no sure thing.

The JWU Regional will be won by JWU. For the sheep, give me all of the top seeds.

For the Babson/Bowdoin/ShouldHaveBeenCMS Regional give me Eastern over Johns Hopkins and the top seeds in the other match-ups. I’d really like to see some upsets here but oddly the two New England Regions don’t really have any good teams in their 5 to 8 seeds. Just laughable the two Mid-Atlantic teams play each other in the first round. This will be their third meeting this year.

You know I love you Berry. You are my daughters from another mother but my “real” children are there. Blood is thicker than water which means you won’t be rowing very well after today. Emory with an easy win over Meredith. Colorado College with an easy win over Washington & Lee. UMHB takes down Birmingham-Southern and I’m not taking BSC lightly in this one. Berry wins their first round match.
