Regionals Day 2
Updates: I swear the NCAA changed a bunch of bracket times from what they were originally.
Stevens with the set one win over Carnegie Mellon. Maine Maritime with the set one win over JWU. Virginia Wesleyan also one set up on Juniata. So, everything going like we planned.
Two easy sets for Colorado College over Whitworth. Unofficially, Jordan Mullens has 76 kills in this one. Man, she can pound. Colorado College is hitting around 0.500 for the match so far.
Carnegie Mellon now down 2 sets and down 5-0 in the third. They are not long for this tournament it appears.
I mentioned a couple of weeks back that Colorado College coach Rick Swan had eye surgery. Well, he still can’t fly so he had to drive to Seguin, Texas last weekend for the SCAC Tournament and to Atlanta for the regional.
Haley Harris is a senior outside for Colorado College that I considered for the All-Region team. Today she’s playing DS on a loaded Tigers team. Whatever it takes. And, as I write this, the Tigers sweep Whitworth. Sad both West teams had to play each other. Jordan Mullen finished with 17 kills as Colorado College only had 5 attacking errors as a team. Emiko Kahler led Whitworth with 10 kills and hit 0.381.
Everyone had Stevens sweeping CMU, right? Juniata down 2-1 to Virginia Wesleyan. Winner plays Trinity. I’m fine with Juniata going home.
Big come back by CMS to take set one. Huge dig by Makenna Fall on set point that lead to the win. CMS wins set two.
Juniata comes back on Virginia Wesleyan. Going to a 5th set. And Juniata wins in 5. They are going to be tough if Trinity wins today.
CMS with a 4-set win over WUSTL. Phoebe Madsen with a triple-double. Amanda Walker led CMS in kills.
Wedding stuff is going to take me away for a couple of hours. Hope you all can live without me.
I missed all of the 2:00 matches. No big surprises. It looks like Trinity lost their focus for a set but the other three were pretty easy wins. Can’t lose your focus from here on out.
Johns Hopkins appears to be a very rude host. Manhattanville doesn’t get to double-digits in any of the three sets.
Couldn’t watch much tonight. The Calvin match looks interesting. ONU destroys them in the first set and has the second set at 25-25. Two points in the other direction and maybe ONU win this. As it turns out, Calvin 3-1.
Stevens Point / Saint Ben is a great regional final. Calvin / Hope should have the place jumping.
It’s hard for a team to win a tournament match when you haven’t been in one for so long so credit to Transy for their win today.

Random Thoughts: Full slate of matches today!
I like the higher seeds in the Emory Regional but Transy is going to be really interesting. They played great at the beginning of the year but really haven’t been tested since then during conference. Will this hurt them starting out?
I would be shocked if the higher seeds didn’t win in the Clarkson Regional.
The big upset from yesterday will give St. Ben the #7 seed Northwestern. I think we have a good chance at seeing another upset but this time with Stevens Point over St. Thomas.
Two great matches in the Calvin Regional. Give me the hosts and the Muskies.
Top 3 seeds are a cut above in the Johns Hopkins Regional. Stockton with a #4 seed is generous but that’s probably because I haven’t seen them this year. Good record but in a poor region.
I don’t see any upsets in the Tufts Regional, either. Probably means we’ll have loads of upsets today.
Top seeds should win in the Chris Newport Regional but watch out for Virginia Wesleyan who is playing well. Marymount could give Randolph-Macon some trouble, too.
And, boom goes the dynamite! Chicago and Carthage should be fine today. CMS will struggle with WUSTL but should win. Give me Whitewater in the upset. I’m betting they have some things figured out.
Now, let’s see what you guys thought. (Poll Results for St. Thomas and Calvin are in yesterday’s report.)
POLL RESULTS
Emory Regional
Emory | 63.64% 35 |
– Berry | 7.27% 4 |
– Colorado College | 23.64% 13 |
– Birmingham-Southern | 1.82% 1 |
– Transylvania | 1.82% 1 |
– Whitworth | 1.82% 1 |
– Maryville | 0.00% 0 |
– Notre Dame | 0.00% 0 |
TOTAL | 55 |
Berry is underrepresented here. Lot of readers in Colorado Springs, I see. I think Emory is the obvious choice and they are playing really well. I’ve seen them throw out a clinker this year (CMS) so anything is possible. I really want to take Colorado College here but going through both Berry and Emory is evil. I’ll take Emory with the easier path.
Clarkson Regional
Clarkson | 43.40% 23 |
– Ithaca | 20.75% 11 |
– Wesleyan | 28.30% 15 |
– Wellesley | 5.66% 3 |
– Brockport | 0.00% 0 |
– St. John Fisher | 1.89% 1 |
– Morrisville State | 0.00% 0 |
– Westfield State | 0.00% 0 |
TOTAL | 53 |
Love the St. John Fisher support! Clarkson and Ithaca are a toss-up in my mind. I think Wesleyan actually wins this regional. I bag on New England not because I think they are horrible but because they don’t schedule tough teams and then get rewarded for it.
Johns Hopkins Regional
Johns Hopkins | 56.60% 30 |
– Susquehanna | 24.53% 13 |
– Carnegie Mellon | 18.87% 10 |
– Stockton | 0.00% 0 |
– Penn State-Behrend | 0.00% 0 |
– Stevens | 0.00% 0 |
– Westminster (PA) | 0.00% 0 |
– Manhattanville | 0.00% 0 |
TOTAL | 53 |
I agree this is a three horse race. Johns Hopkins swept Susquehanna this season who swept Carnegie Mellon. So, give me Susquehanna. I think health and a small roster could get to Johns Hopkins.
Tufts Regional
– Tufts | 38.89% 21 |
– Babson | 22.22% 12 |
– Johnson & Wales (RI) | 20.37% 11 |
– Bowdoin | 14.81% 8 |
– Endicott | 1.85% 1 |
– Maine Maritime | 0.00% 0 |
– UMass Boston | 0.00% 0 |
– Eastern Nazarene | 1.85% 1 |
TOTAL | 54 |
This may be the only 8th seed with a vote? This is a top 4 regional and your votes reflect that. I just think, in the end, Tufts will be tuft to beat at home. (Okay, no more dad jokes.)
Christopher Newport Regional
Trinity | 72.22% 39 |
– Christopher Newport | 9.26% 5 |
– Randolph-Macon | 0.00% 0 |
– Juniata | 18.52% 10 |
– Virginia Wesleyan | 0.00% 0 |
– Marymount | 0.00% 0 |
– Stevenson | 0.00% 0 |
– Hunter | 0.00% 0 |
TOTAL | 54 |
Wow, the home team is getting stiffed here. No respect for Randolph-Macon is a mistake. I do think Trinity wins this regional and Juniata maybe their toughest foe.
Chicago Regional
Chicago | 39.29% 22 |
– Carthage | 12.50% 7 |
– Claremont-Mudd-Scripps | 42.86% 24 |
– Otterbein | 1.79% 1 |
– UW-Whitewater | 0.00% 0 |
– Washington-St. Louis | 3.57% 2 |
– Grinnell | 0.00% 0 |
– Westminster (MO) | 0.00% 0 |
TOTAL | 56 |
CMS readers stand up and be noticed! No love for Whitewater but I think they could surprise in this. The only regional where the #1 seed is not favored by you guys. I think any of the three top teams can win this. My heart says CMS but I think Chicago has the easier path so I’ll take them.
