Redwoods Trip: Fisherman’s Restaurant, Crescent City, California

Every vacation ends, alas. On our last morning in Crescent City Nancy and I faced a drive back to Portland to catch a morning flight the next day. That meant a breakfast and coffee to prime us for the journey. I checked the local breakfast options and Fisherman’s Restaurant jumped out, in part because they offer lunguica, the Portuguese sausage. I don’t usually think of seafood restaurants for breakfast, but why not? I enjoyed Becky’s Diner in the other Portland. So Fisherman’s it was. It sits on the main road at 700 US 101, right on the edge of the city dock.

Inside the restaurant was colorful and filled with ample booths and well spaced tables. There’s a bar in the back with stools and tables

and a gift area that’s full of toys and souvenirs situated close by a display case of desserts that I tried to keep out of my line of sight.

The staff were very friendly and welcoming. We found out that they were out of a few things, as a delivery truck was overdue. I was disappointed that they were out of the linguica that I was planning to build my breakfast around. When I returned my attention to the menu, Nancy ordered half of a four-egg omelette.

You’ll recall that the Hiouchi Cafe also served four egg omelettes. Is that unique to the region? Everywhere else seems to serve three. Nancy was well pleased. She prefers two egg omelettes and here the eggs hugged a generous mix of vegetables.
It didn’t take me long to choose a breakfast burrito with bacon, sausage, egg, and cheese, which came with a side of hash browns.

Isn’t that a pretty crust on the hash browns? That crunch and caramelization was the perfect introduction to the potato flavor beneath. Let’s take an inside peek at the burrito.

The sausage was quite good, seasoned with authority, and the cheddar melted well. And those eggs were very creamy, unusually, and the bacon … was bacon in all its glory. The ingredients were in good balance and the burrito was a reasonable size, just right for a long drive (as compared to the burrito at Ruby’s, which had been sized for a day of exertion.)
Nancy had looted the gift store for presents for Ella and Lily while we waited, and put those on our food order bill. That ran up the bill considerably, but even then it wasn’t bad: a lot cheaper than the airport. We had a good stock of presents and a very good meal for our farewell to the redwoods. Our Crescent City VRBO with an ocean view proved a fine base for exploring the National and State Parks. I recommend the area to you. Do try the Fisherman’s Restaurant. Enjoy the lovely people, good food, and reasonable prices.
