Random Learning

When I was a kid my parents bought a set of encyclopedias. While I am sure my parents had visions that we would use them through college for research, they came out of date fairly quickly and really only served the research purpose through middle school.

One purpose that they did serve well was randomly picking out a book and opening it to a random page to find something new and interesting. You could learn about tectonic plates, the history of Morocco or how weaving works. This random acquisition of knowledge was a bonus to the kinds of things that is often force-fed into kids.

With the evolution of the Internet, so many more facts suddenly became available. The traditional encyclopedia publishers first occupied the knowledge space but soon they found it was not very profitable as most information on the Internet was free. Wikipedia began (and still is) a user developed and maintained encyclopedia. Wikipedia gets a lot of bad press for inaccuracies, but in reality it is a pretty good resource for surface learning about many things. What often was lost with an Internet, or Wikipedia search, though, was the pure randomness of learning.

I was very glad the other day to find that Wikipedia has a random article director. On the left hand bar, simply select Random article and off you are to a new world of learning.

There is nothing random about making these beans taste good. It is by design.

I chose to use frozen beans over the canned kind.
