Quotes from ACBC
The Friday feature of the Worldly Saints blog is all about quotes. No commentary from me, no reflection, etc. Just a provocative or informative quote from a saint in church history.
To keep with the theme of quotes on Fridays, I thought I would share some of the more memorable quotes I gathered and wrote down from this past week’s ACBC Conference at Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, CA.
Date: Monday, October 6 Speaker: Dan Gannon Message Title: “Drugs and Disillusions” 1st Quote: “Physical illness may affect behavior but they cannot cause sin in our thoughts or feelings or behavior. Organic causes are and should be treated medically, but remember that sin comes from the heart and not the body.” 2nd Quote: “Drugs are not Gospel blockers. Drugs will not keep us from helping people. We can always help the inner man. Their heart issues are the primary concern.” 3rd Quote: “A psychological label (e.g., ADHD, OCD, etc.) can remove hope for change and eliminate all responsibility. Help them remove the stranglehold of those labels.”
Date: Tuesday, October 7 Speaker: Heath Lambert Message Title: “Brothers, We Are Not Therapists” 1st Quote: “Counseling should be controlled by Jesus’ agenda and not therapeutic issues.” 2nd Quote: “Biblical counseling is the most complex because it integrates both the spiritual and physical. However, it is not to be therapeutic; it is fundamentally ministerial.”
Date: Tuesday, October 7 Speaker: John MacArthur Message Title: “God’s Truth in a Culture of Mental Illness” 1st Quote: “We aren’t waiting for God’s wrath; we are living in it.” (referring to Romans 1:18-25) 2nd Quote: “People are not our enemies; they are our mission field and they are caught in the system we hate.”
Date: Wednesday, October 8 Speaker: Charles Hodges Message Title: “What’s Medical about Mental Illness” Quote: “Never call sin a disease. Never call it sin unless the Bible calls it sin.”
