Quarterfinals! (11/16/2017)

Update: I guess I’m the only one with a problem with these links? Waited for a Live Stat or video to update for almost 30 minutes and then see the Live Stats jump to the game 1 results. Video wouldn’t play on either of my computers. I finally went to the NCAA site and accessed the video that way. The NCAA app on my phone wouldn’t play the video, either. Again, I guess I’m the only one.

Also, Chrome didn’t work. Had to use IE. And strangely, only the Verizon ad would then lead me to the match. Tired head.

All that and Ithaca takes set two. So much for my sweep prediction.

Just like I predicted, Ithaca up 2-1. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a man up defense that Ithaca is using. The old ‘W’. Cerruti and Stone are bringing it for the Bombers.

Crazy. Ithaca just plain beat Emory. They hit better and played better defense. Kind of funny when you consider the entire reseeding effort benefits Emory the most and their coach was one of the most vocal for it. I guess nobody told Ithaca how this was supposed to go down. Floyd with 53 assists, Goldstein and Stillwell with 15 digs, Cerruti with 16.5 points, Cerruti and Stone with 13 kills and Evans hits at .467. Team effort. Emory’s Carr has 13 kills and 14 points in the losing effort.

CMS lost every first set at the Georgetown Regional and figured why mess with a good thing. Gusties win 25-16. CMS struggling on defense and Gusties hitting .390 with only one attack error.

CMS comes back strong and takes the match 3 sets to 1. They really weren’t challenged after the first set as the Gusties hit worse in every successive set. There was a huge height advantage here and the blocking numbers are the result. Arntson with 16 kills and 17 points lead the Athenas. Werner with 21 digs and Madsen (ha ha) leads the team in assists. Dinovitz has 8 block assists in the match. Albers and Haugen lead the Gusties in hitting. Luethmers had 26 digs.

Well, maybe the least interesting match so far as Wittenberg sweeps Swarthmore. Swarthmore almost pulled out set 2 but went rather quietly in the first and third. I didn’t come away terribly impressed by either team but what do I know…I picked Emory over Ithaca. Fischer led the Tigers with 13 kills and 14 points. Wildmeann with 33 assists and Yontz with 21 digs. den Braven led Swartmore with 8 kills and 9 points but hit 0.000. Leventhal also had 8 kills. Girard led both teams with 24 digs.

The big match is up next and real life will tear me away from most of it. Should be a good one.

Back from my weekly yoga class which made me miss the Calvin sweep. I was able to see set 1. Great crowd. The Wittenberg / Calvin match should be a good one.

All times Central.

Random Thoughts: Last year, every quarterfinal match went to 5 sets. I don’t see that happening this year. Best match has to be the #4/#5 match-up. I see a Calvin victory but it will be interesting to see how J&W handles the hostile crowd and the butterflies (maybe a 3-1 result). I can see the CMS match having close games but in the end a 3-0 or 3-1 result. I think we’ll see an Emory sweep and a 3-1 result for Wittenberg. Whoa, so no 5-set matches in my mind. I think that is a direct result of the reseeding process used this year. Of course, I have to be right and that has been a problem for me for a very long time.
