Q/A Friday: Can You Give a Brief Definition of the Sovereignty of God?
The sovereignty of God is that unceasing activity of God where He upholds His creatures. God’s sovereignty means He guides and governs all events, circumstances, and free acts. It means He directs everything to its appointed goal, for His own glory. And there are no boundaries to His sovereignty.
The Webster’s Dictionary and Thesaurus gives the following synonyms or likened phrases for the word “sovereignty”: “chief,” “above all else,” “supreme,” “authority,” “holding the position of ruler,” “over all others,” etc. God is sovereign. Or to put it simply, like A.W. Pink wrote, “Divine sovereignty means God is God.” It is His God-ness.
There are people who don’t like the fact that God is sovereign. Some don’t like God’s sovereignty because they are not comfortable with the idea of being wholly at the disposal of God. People are hostile to God’s sovereignty because they want the reins; they don’t want to be ruled by anyone.
R.C. Sproul says sovereignty is God’s favorite doctrine, and it would be ours too if we were God, because God likes to be in control.
