Product Review: Kirkland Signature Super Extra-Large Peanuts

Nuts are delicious. I have previously reviewed both nuts (Product Review: Kirkland Signature Extra Fancy Unsalted Mixed Nuts) and nut butters ((Product Review:Kirkland organic creamy peanut butter); Product Review: Kirkland almond butter)). However, although I very much enjoyed the Kirkland Signature Super Extra-Large Peanuts, I had neglected to review them…until now.

These peanuts are the Virginia variety, roasted and salted, gluten free, kosher, and described as “extra crunchy.”

Each can is 2.5 pounds (40 ounces) and costs roughly $8.99

Of course I had to do some research about Virginia peanuts. (People have joked that I always seem to know something about virtually anything they ask me. I guess it is because, in addition to a LOT of school and reading all the time, I’m very curious and like knowing background information. For example, when I hear a very common expression, I often look up the origin). Apparently, there are four types of peanuts grown in the United States: Runner, Spanish, Valencia and Virginia. Virginia peanuts are the largest in size and have their distinct flavor due to being grown in the soil of several southern and southwestern States of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Oklahoma, and Texas. Virginia peanuts are referred to as “gourmet” and may be called  Ballpark Peanuts, because they may be sold hot at baseball games.

I have not had these peanuts in a long time, mainly because the can is so large.  As much as I like peanuts, I don’t eat too many of them. When I do snack on nuts, it tends to be mixed nuts.  However, I remember them being delicious. Each nut was huge (maybe twice the size of a regular peanut), crunchy, and had an extremely strong flavor. These nuts really do almost “pop” in the mouth.  There were no small pieces and, although salted, the peanut flavor dominated rather than the salt (I find that sometimes nuts can be so salty that the salt overwhelms the nut flavor).

They make a great snack on their own. I have also eaten them in the delicious combination of peanuts and chocolate chips (for some reason, growing up, although we sometimes had peanut M & Ms, my mom preferred and introduced me to salted peanuts and plain M & Ms, and I then started mixing the nuts with chocolate chips). They would probably also be good with raisins or other dried fruit.

Have you tried these peanuts? Thoughts?
