Product Review: Golden Taste Red Skin Potato Salad
Several years ago I wrote a very positive review of Golden Taste Cole slaw (Product Review: Golden Taste Cole Slaw). I tend to really enjoy Golden Taste products (Product Review: Golden Taste Broccoli Kugel; Product Review: Golden Taste Tuna Deluxe).
Although I know other Costco stores carry it, I have rarely seen it locally. Costco did used to carry an absolutely delicious red bliss
potato
salad
in a huge tub. I don’t know the brand and I don’t think it was kosher but it was so delicious. It made it exciting to have a large guest list for a cookout because it was a great excuse to buy it (I realize this makes me sound like others are socializing and I am off in the corner eating my
potato
salad
…)
Back to *this*
potato
salad
…although rarely seen here, even when the Coleslaw is available (generally Passover and the summer), it is currently in Waltham so I tried it. The
potato
salad
is made with red bliss potatoes, which I guess is standard for higher quality
potato
salads
…sorry russets…). They are perfectly cooked, hard enough to hold together and hold their own in the mayonnaise but easy enough to chew. There are a lot of chunks about the size of a square inch around and then of course some smaller pieces. The
potato
salad
is quite dense. I know I may be unusual in this respect but I would prefer less mayonnaise. I find that the current amount makes the
salad
too thick. Furthermore, the mayonnaise taste and texture tend to dominate whereas I would prefer to taste a greater balance of dressing and
potato
. The spices in the mayonnaise, including dill, are very good but I would prefer a much thinner coating..maybe about one third as much mayonnaise.
It is quite filling and pretty strong tasting so a relatively small portion will likely suffice as a side dish.
My family definitely likes it more than I do. If around, I’d probably have it a few times but I would not buy it for myself or seek it out. I definitely prefer the Coleslaw…and I prefer the tuna
salad
over both (but it’s not really fair to compare, as the tuna is a meal vs a side dish..at least for me.)
Have you tried this
potato
salad
? Thoughts? Do you like the amount of mayonnaise? What do you eat it with?
