Product Review: Chobani Whole Milk Plain Greek Yogurt
Yogurt has really taken over the grocery stores! There are so many varieties! Every flavor, every “milk” type (dairy, goat, oat, almond…), every fat percentage, every country of origin…I used to like flavored yogurt (especially vanilla and raspberry) but now I find them much too sweet. Therefore, I stick with plain and switched over to Greek years ago.
I seem to review plain yogurt products every few years. In the past, I reviewed the Kirkland plain Greek yogurt (Product Review: Kirkland Greek Yogurt) and then, a few years later, the Organic Plain Greek Yogurt that replaced it (Product Review: Kirkland Organic Greek Yogurt). I still eat the latter yogurt and enjoy it quite a bit. However, recently, I tried the Chobani Whole Milk Plain Greek Yogurt (others had bought it on sale and gave me some to try).
I am mixed on my willingness to try full fat dairy products. I grew up on 1% milk and since then have alternated between that and skim (I think 1% is significantly better). I think I have had 2% a few times and liked it. The one time I remember having whole milk was when I was in college. It was actually “moving out” day so the dining center was not as well stocked as usual. I was late to breakfast and there was only whole milk (and probably some rice milk…) so I gave it a try in my cereal…I couldn’t even finish the bowl…it was so rich! Since then I have had full fat cottage cheese a few times (very good but generally eat the low fat Breakstone’s (Product review: Breakstone’s cottage cheese) and I eat full fat ice cream (yum!!!), but I had never tried the yogurt.
It is delicious! Rich, creamy, and slightly sour, it is very filling and was a great topping for my cheese blintzes (crepes). Never a huge fan of pure sour cream, I bet that this yogurt would be great with a baked potato, with banana, or with some hot blueberry sauce. It had sort of an “addictive” quality. I was not immediately sure I liked it but then I kept wanting to spoon it up! The thick texture is extremely comforting.
I am not going to replace the nonfat variety with this yogurt…I think it would be too rich to eat too often (it really could be eaten as a dessert!). However, it definitely does make a good treat. Now that I recently ate it, I am curious to see how I feel about the nonfat variety.
Have you tried this yogurt?
Any recommendations for using it? Other fruits? Granola? Just plain?
