Polonia Ladies Players From 2012 to 2016
Introduction
I recently asked Polonia SideOut London’s Head Coach Mark Kontopoulous who would be in his Polonia All-Star Team, i.e. who would be in his starting seven of all the players he has coached at Polonia. It’s a similar musing I had when I tried to answer who would be in the Super 8s Statistics All-Star Team or the SP8S North vs South All Star Team. This discussion also lead to other questions. This motivated me to try and answer some of these questions.
Who Has Played for Polonia SideOut London in the Past Four Seasons?
This question would pop up in trying to remember who actually played for us and in what positions. A tricky one to answer was who was our main opposite in my first season. We barely remembered that it was actually Luca Toth, who went on to play her preferred position of setter for the next two seasons. It is interesting to see the team lists for the past four seasons now it is written down.

How Much Does the Polonia SideOut London Team Change Every Season?
Some people have said that a part of the success at Polonia is having the same team season after season. I knew this not to be the case. You can see in the stacked bar chart that about half of the team every season is comprised of new players (50%, 56% and 39% for seasons 2013/14, 2014/15 and 2015/16 respectively). This pretty much means I am starting new again every season because I don’t know the base performance level of half the team. Of course, as I collect more data on players match after match, I get to see where their strengths and weaknesses lie and thus I can better advise the coach on improvements based on objective data.

How Many Seasons Have Players Been With Polonia SideOut London?
A trivia question to come out of this data is which two players has played for Polonia for all four season? The answer is Joanna Healy and Sofia Vlachou. Unfortunately, both won’t be around next season as Joanna is back living in Australia and Sofia has retired. Four players are on three seasons – Hris Kolevea, Luca Toth, Anna Nikopoulou and Gabi Medricka – and they can match Jo and Sofia if they play next season. You can see that Polonia have used 46 players in the past four seasons and the doughnut chart shows more than half of them have only played one season.

Who Has Played the Most at Polonia SideOut London?
We know who has played the most seasons but who actually has played the most sets? This is a better indication of how involved in the team they are. You can see Capitano Hris Koleva has played the most sets (183 sets played) while Luca Toth is close in second place (175 sets played). They are way ahead of Katja Gless and Karolina Tokarczyk in joint third place (both on 123 sets played). Gaia Canevari has the distinction of playing the most sets in a single season (83 sets played, ranked 11th overall).

Who Would Be in My Polonia All-Star Team?
This is was the original question I wanted answered. Looking at the team lists and from what I remember of their stats, I got a good idea of who I would pick for my Polonia All-Star team. However, it would be interesting to see what the team would look like if I selected the team purely on stats. I might do that in another post but I have to put in the work of compiling the stats across the four seasons (StatEasy vs DataVolley) and overcome the difficulty what performance indicator to use in each position to compare players (due to the evolution of the operational definitions).
