Pittsburgh Pirates Name 2025 Opening Day Starter

S. Samek

The Pittsburgh Pirates have named their Opening Day 2025 starter 11 days ahead of the opening game of the season.

It’s probably not surprising, but they are giving the ball to Paul Skenes. The 2024 National league Rookie of the Year award winner will make the first Opening Day start of his career. Sandy Alcantara will oppose Skenes for the Marlins that day.

The Pirates take on the Miami Marlins on the road in the opening series of the season. It’s a four-game series running from March 27-3oth, 2025. The rest of the rotation for that series hasn’t been announced yet but should follow shortly.

Skenes is 1-0 against the Marlins with a 1.50 ERA. He pitched six innings allowing one run on one hit. He struck out nine and walked one in the winning effort on September 9th, 2024.

Depending on the rotation and if they want to push back Skenes, he isn’t in line to start the Pirates home opener on April 4th, 2025.

Though it is good to see Skenes start Opening Day. Hoping it’s the first of many for him throughout his career.
