The Pittsburgh Pirates used the long ball and some excellent pitching to win big over the New York Mets on Friday July 5th, 2024, by a 14-2 margin.

The 14-run outburst was aided by seven home runs, which tied the franchise record for most in a game. Two of the shots were grant slams. Bryan Reynolds hit one in the bottom of the seventh inning to make it 8-2. Then an inning later Rowdy Tellez would hit another one making it 14-2.

Reynolds finished 4-5 and had another home run while driving in six runs. This game really helped make his case for an all-star spot.

Tellez also had a solo home run in the fourth inning, giving him five total RBI in the game.

Paul Skenes was the beneficiary of all the run support, not that he needed it. He went seven innings allowing just a pair of runs on four hits. He walked two and struck out eight.

The eight strikeouts give him seven, or more strikeouts in nine of his first 10 career starts. This is the most in Major League history for a players first 10 starts.

He earned the win as well, making him 5-0 to start his career.

The win is much needed as the Mets and Pirates are close in the standings, with the Mets at 42-44 and the Pirates at 42-45 after yesterday’s game.

The Pirates look to take the series with a win today and will start Bailey Falter on the mound. First pitch is 4:05 PM.
