Piggy (2022)

Director: Carlota Pereda
Starring: Laura Galán, Richard Holmes, Carmen Machi
An overweight teen is bullied by a clique of cool girls poolside while holidaying in her village. The long walk home will change the rest of her life.
Sara works in a butchery with her parents. Everyone is making fun of her and humiliating her because she is overweight. One day on a visit to the pool, three of her friends bully and almost drown her, and then take her clothes.
A Stranger, who happens to be in the pool, sees this and takes pity on Sara. On her way home, Sara notices one of her friends in the back of a car, pleading for help. Sara decides to continue her walk home, and says nothing to anyone.
This sets in motion a series of events. What if a situation arises where the only person who can save you is the one you made fun of? If someone continuously bullies you, would you help them if they’re in peril? While Sara is clearly haunted by what she saw, she is also reluctant to contact the authorities. The film pretty much leaves judgement up to the viewer.
In many ways, ‘Piggy’ is a very unusual film. I can’t really compare it to anything else I’ve seen. It feels like it ought to be a slasher, but its not. It has elements of horror, but its not really a horror. In a way, I guess, it’s a psychological thriller. However you perceive ‘Piggy’, there’s no denying you won’t forget this movie. It is well made and well acted. Laura Galán delivers a wonderful performances as Sara, or the titular Piggy. This is a unique film that deserves to be seen.
‘Piggy’ received 39 award nominations, winning 10 including Best Actress for Laura Galán, and Best Film. The film also received nominations for Best Director, Best Supporting Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Feature Film, Best Makeup and Hairstyles, and Best International Movie.
In Spanish.
Would I watch it again? Maybe.
