Pick your movie of the week: 1985 Best Picture Nominees (Jan 29-Feb 4 /23)

1985 was a great year for movies. So great that I wish the limitation for Best Picture Oscar nominees was 10 instead of 5, like it would become over 20 years later. Likely A Room With a View and The Purple Rose of Cairo would have been added then, maybe even Cocoon and After Hours (A Scorcese flick). And really, I don’t think the Academy back then would have done this, but Back to the Future and The Breakfast Club should also be added in that scenario. In fact, they could easily replace the winner, Out of Africa, IMHO.
But here are 3 movies that were nominated that year but failed to take home the prize. I didn’t include The Color Purple because I thought it would be too easy of a winner… maybe that was a mistake. Regardless, these are the nominees this week for Movie of the Week. Which one is your pick?
Prizzi’s Honor(1985)Two professional assassins fall in love.
Witness (1985)When a young Amish boy is sole witness to a murder while visiting Philadelphia with his mother, police detective John Book tries to protect the boy until an attempt on Book’s life forces him into hiding in Amish country.
Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985)A gay man and a political prisoner are together in a prison. The gay man narrates the stories of two fake movies and his own life.
