Pembroke College, Oxford Turns 400

Pembroke College, Oxford first opened its gates to students on August 6, 1624. That’s nearly 300 years later than Pembroke College, Cambridge, but I just happened to notice that this nice round anniversary, this quatercentenary, was upon us, and also that I had written about some of its famous alum, and am likely to write about others: these include Samuel Johnson, George Whitefield, J.R.R. Tolkien,Charles Hawtrey, Francis Beaumont, and Honeysuckles Weeks (from Foyle’s War). There are naturally scores of other notables, but mercifully, they fall outside our parameters.
A tip of the mortarboard cap to this august institution. Like I always says: skools iz good.
