One Way to Take Advantage of Self-Quarantine

As more of us are practicing “social distancing,” we are going to have extra time at home in the next few weeks and months. What will you do with your extra time? Hopefully, the answer to that is not “watch more TV” or “binge more on Netflix.”Here is what I suggest: read more. Those books you thought you wouldn’t have time to read, read those. That book that has been taking you too long to read, read that one.

If you need further suggestions, read one of these books.

  1. Any book from the Killing Bill O’Reilly has a collection of history books that are very engaging where he explains the circumstances surrounding the deaths and/or assassinations of (or attempts at assassination) prominent figures throughout church history. You can read about General George Patton, John F. Kennedy, Abraham Lincoln, Ronald Reagan, the Empire of Japan during WWII, and even Jesus.

  2. Suffering and the Sovereignty of God by John Piper and Justin Taylor. This would be an intentional read that will equip you to think rightly during the COVID-19 outbreak. You will believe even more that God is in control and that He never wastes sickness.

  3. A good biography or autobiography. There are almost too any to mention. My favorite missionary biography is King of the Cannibals by Jim Cremarty (about John G. Paton). My favorite reformers biography is Here I Stand by Harold Bainton (about Martin Luther. My favorite biography about my extra-biblical hero J.C. Ryle is Prepared to Stand Alone by Iain Murray. Soon, I plan on reading a biography of Mr. Rogers, as the recent movie whet my appetite to get to know him more.

  4. The Compelling Community by Mark Dever and Jamie Dunlop. You might read this as a Christian whose church is not able to meet during the COVID-19 crisis and this book will help you long for a return to gatherings, but it will also give you some practical ideas for how to treasure the body of Christ even more.

  5. The Bible. How is that yearly Bible reading going? If you are behind, you have plenty of time to catch up if you are self-quarantined.
