Once upon a movie list…

…there was a stable boy who fell in love with a beautiful movie list. This is their story:

Here is my attempt to list the top 10 fairy tale movies of all time (Two actually: one for non-animated and one animated.). This will not be a list of my own favourites, though I’m sure it will be influenced by them. It also only includes movies I’ve seen, so correct me if I’ve left an important one out.

THE CRITERIA:

Dictionary.com defines ‘fairytale’ as “a children’s story about magical and imaginary beings and lands.” I’ve also come to discover that they are often short (shorter anyway) stories than that of, say, or . They are also intended for children, so I did not include (2005) or (2003). I also left off a personal favourite, (2006), as it can be a little too scary for children.

Now with the list credo out of the way, here is the list:

PART I: The Ultimate Top 10 LIVE ACTION Fairy Tale Movies:

  1. Alice in Wonderland

  2. Maleficent (2014)

  3. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe(2005) <I nearly excluded this one, but it is clearly a stand-alone movie despite its being a part of a franchise.>

  4. The NeverEnding Story (1984)

  5. Hook (1992)

  6. Edward Scissorhands (1990) <Maybe this one is too high? It’s one of my own favourites…>

  7. Ever After (1998)

  8. Enchanted (2007)

  9. The Princess Bride

  10. The Wizard of Oz (1937)

Honourable Mentions:

(2014); (1988); (2010); (2008); (2007); (2006); (2003); (2008); (1985); (2009)

PART II: The Ultimate Top 10 ANIMATED Fairy Tale Movies:

  1. Spirited Away (2001)

  2. Aladdin (1992)

  3. Sleeping Beauty (1959)

  4. Pinocchio (1940)

  5. The Little Mermaid (1989)

  6. Tangled (2010)

  7. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) <This one gets its high spot based mainly on its groundbreaking influence. Most of the preceding movies I’d say are much better.>

  8. Frozen (2012) <And this one gets its high spot based on the opinions of actual children all over the world.>

  9. Cinderella (1955)

  10. Beauty and the Beast (1991)

Honourable Mentions:

Peter Pan (1953); Alice in Wonderland (1951); Anastasia (1997); Robin Hood (1973); The Princess and the Frog (2009)

Technically, one movie above doesn’t fit the description, though I think most everyone would consider it a fairy tale movie. doesn’t have the element of magic or fictional lands, but it is based on , a story that is a 100% bona fide fairy tale. So it not only gets a pass to be included, but it also gets the high distinction of being our movie of the week.

Congratulations . This is your week.

Best Actress:

Other than Barrymore, I saw we give the honours to as Cameron Diaz as Natalie in

Best Actor: Former WCW heavyweight champion David Arquette as Rob Geller in

Best Quote:“This is horrible Alex, this is very bad! Unless you’re happy about this in which case I couldn’t be more pleased for you… Should we do pros and cons?” – Brad Garrett as Chris Riley in

I found it interesting on one site I visited that listed The Matrix (1999) as a fairy tale movie. The webpage writers stated that they saw it as a kind of retelling of Alice in Wonderland.

Also, my own personal fairy tale favourites list would have The Princess Bride, Edward Scissorhands, and Hook at the top.
