On the Bowery

Fate has decreed that my relationship with this particular little lane will be increasing over the next few months, hence my enhanced interest in the topic.  (Watch here for future announcements). The Bowery has had many different identities over the centuries. For most of the 20th century it was synonymous with “Skid Row.” Opening tonight at the Film Forum is a documentary film shot at the apex of that era when the words ‘Bowery” and “bum” went together like “salt” and “pepper”. Lionel Rogosin’s On the Bowery was shot in 1956 — the gritty black and white photos and the glowing descriptions on Film Forum’s web site have me chomping at the bit to see it. Find out more about it here.
