Today is the birthday of Noah Young (1887-1958). A former champion weightlifter (rumored to be rejected from the navy because he was missing too many teeth), he began as a principal heavy for Hal Roach starting in 1918, and the list of films in which he terrorized Harold Lloyd and Laurel & Hardy is long indeed. In the talkie era he was reduced to uncredited walk-ons, the last of which was Bonnie Scotland (1935).

For more on silent and slapstick comedy film history see my bookChain of Fools: Silent Comedy and Its Legacies from Nickelodeons to Youtube, just released by Bear Manor Media, also available from amazon.com etc etc etc
