Night 1 of Advent – How the World Celebrates Christmas
We kicked off our Advent season this evening. Last year, we didn’t make a big deal about celebrating the Christmas story any more than our Sunday School lessons or sermons, but this year we wanted to make things different and memorable.
I had the idea a year or so ago of writing my own Advent lessons that would encompass not just the Christmas story, but explain the reason the world needed Jesus to come and then not end with His birth but end with His death (aka the Gospel message). And because my kids idolize LEGOS I thought it would be fun to build something at the end of each lesson that memorialized our lesson.
Night 1 – We talked about how the world celebrates Christmas. Jackson & Josiah brainstormed things that are not a part of the Christmas story that people celebrate this time of year (e.g., Santa Claus, frosty, Christmas trees, candy canes, etc.). We then discussed briefly how it is fine to have all those parts accompany our season but we made sure to distinguish they are not a part of the REAL Christmas story. And here is what we built to commemorate our 1st lesson: Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer, a sleigh, Frosty the Snowman and a candy cane.
Tomorrow, we will begin studying the Bible more formally and begin looking at God’s story of His coming.
