Feb 19, 2015
3 min read

Mac and I spent 39 amazingly beautiful days in Nicaragua.

We spent a total of $2807.58 USD. (More information can be found in my Month #1 Recap).

summary

We visited 9 cities/areas and slept in a total of 18 different beds.

Below is a list of the places we stayed (with some other recommendations too). Managua

Hotel Maracuya, Nicaragua. An unfortunate $20 cab ride from the airport. Clean rooms. Breakfast included. We paid $40 for a private room with shared bathroom.

I’ve heard good things about Managua Backpackers Inn too.

Leon

Lazy Bones Hotel. $30 for a private room with private bathroom. There is a few common areas open to guests: the garden that is lined with hammocks & tables and chairs for lounging; the computer area; a swimming pool and adjoining deck to eat breakfast (65C$).

Other popular spots include: Big Foot & Via Via.

Las Penitas

Big Foot Beach House. $5 (per person) dorm bed. Party central. Offers surf lessons. Small pool, pool table available too.

Barca de Oro. $25 for private cabana. 1 double bed, 2 single beds. Private (very rustic) bathroom with shower.

Esteli

We stayed at the Hotel Mery ($20/night. Double bed, private bathroom), but wouldn’t race at recommending it.

We heard awesome things about Hotel Luna.

Matagalpa

Hostel El Castillo was our place of residence for our 4 days in Matagalpa. $23/night with a private bathroom.

Buena Onda was also a popular spot amongst fellow backpackers.

Corn Islands

See this post.

Granada

Hospedaje La Libertad was an amazing bargain of $12/night for a private room with shared bathroom.

Hostel Oasis is the mecca for backpackers in Granada. They organize day trips & have shuttles to Laguna de Apoyo as well as other nearby attractions. Calle 14 de Septiembre is FULL of different hostels. The Bearded Monkey & Dona Dona were popular spots.

Isla de Ometepe

In Moyogalpa we stayed at Dona Chilos ($15/night with a private bathroom) and Hospedaje Cental (also $15/night with a private bathroom). On the other side of the island in Balgues, we stayed at Hospedaje Asi Es Mi Tierra ($12/night, shared bathroom). In Santo Domingo we stayed at Villa Buena Vista ($30/night, private bathroom).

El Zopilote was a mecca for travelers but as it doesn’t take reservations, it’s very difficult to get a spot. Ometepe has a lot of Fincas as well with volunteer opportunities (Finca Magdalena & Finca Bona Fide are both located just outside of Balgues).

San Juan Del Sur

We lucked out and managed to find an awesome apartment rental for 6 of the 9 nights we were in town. Given that it’s a small world, we actually ended up knowing the guys in the apartment above us so we moved in with them for the last 3 nights of our stay in SJDS. A guy named Oscar hooked us up with the first apartment right as soon as we stepped off the bus. Nicknamed “the Swoopster”, he has an in with most of the hotels & restaurants in the town. He’s a friendly guy and can be seen either near the bus stop (waiting for new travelers to arrive) or walking around town handing out flyers for restaurants & bars.

The list for recommendations on where to stay in SJDS is long. We’ve heard great things about the following places: Naked Tiger, Pacha Mamas, Pelican Eyes ($$$), Casa Oro.
