New Items for January 2025
As we know, in addition to the items that have been available for years (e.g., chocolate chunk cookies; rotisserie chickens; bananas; pistachios), other items have been discontinued (It’s Gone? Discontinued Products) and others introduced. I like to keep on top of, and share information about, new items. In this post, I will discuss some new items (mostly food) for the winter that I have recently read about.
New Items at Costco in January 2025
1. Almond Croissant Pastry
One new bakery item are Almond Croissant Pastries. They consist of a butter croissant dough with an almond filling and topped with sliced almonds and powdered sugar.
The traditional croissants are always available in the bakery section. I have never tried them because I don’t like croissants but I have seen them at events in the past. I am even less interested in this new variety because I don’t like almond flavor in baked goods. However , I imagine they are a nice change for people and would look nice on a pastry platter.
2. Onion Cheese Pinwheels
A second new bakery item introduced this winter is one of the few savory baked goods. These onion cheese croissant pinwheels are made of croissant dough that is filled with caramelized onions and cheese, and topped with a sprinkle of seasoning. They are found in the refrigerated compartment of the bakery but are best served warm. The article also recommends brushing your teeth after eating them!
I have read positive reviews of this new item but it is definitely not appealing to me. In addition to not liking croissants, I really dislike onions. I know some have eaten them as a breakfast pastry but they seem more like a substitute for a sandwich bread or dinner roll.
3. Mini Buffalo Chicken Rolls
A new frozen appetizer offered at Costco are these Buffalo Chicken Rolls. The crispy crust contains buffalo chicken, celery, onion, carrots.
Not for me but the reviews are positive about the ease of cooking and the spice level.
3. Botanical Stoneware Bowls
A non edible item on the list of new items are these Botanical Stoneware Bowls. They are sold in packs of 10 4.75″ bowls, each with a pretty botanical design.
I don’t need new bowls but Costco does sell some very pretty ones. These are also a good size for serving snacks.
4. PB&J Snack Mix
A new snack at Costco in some Midwest locations is PB&J Snack Mix. The mix contains peanut butter coated crispy peanuts and dried sweetened strawberries coated in a jam flavored ruby cacao.
Even though I cannot get these in Boston, I was curious about them so I looked them up. They look good. Even though I don’t love dried strawberries, the coating makes them more appealing. In addition, the ability to have a relatively healthy and easily transported version of PB&J sounds good. I suppose we will see if they are enough of a success in the Midwest to be offered at other locations.
5. LEGO Botanicals
Another non food item new to Costco this January are LEGO Botanicals. There are two sets (Mini Orchid; Lucky Bamboo).
I first became aware of the LEGO flowers a few years ago and actually have one from Costco in my house. Although it looks like a very enjoyable activity, I still have not opened it. However, I should and if I like it, I would be interested in buying more sets.
6. Tate’s Cookie Bark
A new sweet treat offered at Costco this winter is Tate’s Dark Chocolate Cookie Bark. The bark consists of thin, crispy cookie pieces covered in dark chocolate and sea salt.
I bought Tate’s chocolate chip cookies when they were on sale in August (Product Review: Tate’s Bake Shop Chocolate Chip Cookies). I enjoy them very much and eat them several times each week with chocolate milk (Product Review: Fairlife Nutrition Plan Chocolate Milk); yes, I am five years old)). This bark also sounds very good and, given the high quality of Tate’s items, it is probably worth a try. If anything, I wonder if the chocolate coating would “ruin” the cookies by dominating the delicious buttery flavor. However, the combination of cookie, dark chocolate, and sea salt may be too good to pass up.
7. Farmrich Cheddar Cheese Curds
Another frozen item that members can try this winter are Cheddar Cheese Curds that can be baked in the oven.
I actually did not know what cheese curds were and was imagining some more akin to cottage cheese. The picture looks more like mozzarella “nuggets.” Not an item for me but I know many people who love any item made with cheese and would probably really like this appetizer.
8. Preserved Duck Eggs
Another new item for January is a timely item for the Chinese New Year.
I don’t know anything about preserved eggs but I have seen a big increase in traditional Asian products over the last few years.
9. Connect 4 Giant Edition
The third nonedible item is an outdoor game. The Giant Connect 4 (46″ x 40″) is waterproof and apparently easy to put together.
This outdoor game follows the seasonal pattern at Costco by being sold several months before it would be used in colder climates (Navigating Seasonal Items at Costco). My association with Connect 4 is playing it on rainy days at summer camp when we could not go outside. I always found it boring. However, a large game that can be played outside is much more appealing, especially because kids can participate too.
10. Kirkland Signature Old Fashioned
Costco introduced Kirkland Signature brand old fashioned in a ready-to-drink liter bottle. It is highly recommended as it enables the taste of the drink without the work of mixing the large number of ingredients to make the drink from scratch. It contains bourbon whiskey, simple syrup, and bitters, is 37% alcohol, and not too sweet.
I have mentioned before that I don’t drink or know much about alcohol. However, the reviews are quite positive and it is clearly an easy way to have a complicated drink.
Were you aware of these new January items? Will you buy any?
