Need Some Humility? Look at God!

“Unto you I lift up my eyes, O You who dwell in the heavens.” (Psalm 123:1)

The psalmist is looking to God because he is wearied by his enemies (vs. 3-4). The psalmist shows us the precious example of what we are to do in response to this type of behavior and how to protect oneself from participating in such evil.

What did the psalmist go? He gazed at God. The psalmist says, “unto You I lift up my eyes.” This lifting of the eyes is a posture of prayer and is a literal, natural response when we are in need, which is why a number of commentators say this is a psalm for the eyes. It commands us what to look at.

And what does he see when he looks to God? He sees One who lives “in the heavens.” The word is “dwell” or “enthroned.” God’s home is there. And that word “enthroned” depicts a sovereign God who is in control of all things. He rules the universe, and the psalmist knows where to look.

There are few things that humble you more than looking at God’s beauty and His wonderful character and contemplating His splendor. When we realize our unworthiness, our inability to save ourselves and the wretched condition we are in without God, we can’t help but humbled.
