My Top 10 Resources for Studying Matthew

In a few months, I will complete the longest preaching series of my ministry career. I started the Gospel of Matthew on June 26, 2016, and I hope to finish this Gospel by mid-May.

Whenever I start out preaching through a book of the Bible, I always have more resources I am consulting at the beginning than at the end. Over time, I “weed out” those resources that are quoting everyone else or simply aren’t adding to the conversation of various texts. And by the end of my study, I usually have a handful of “go to’s” that I am regularly reading.

I don’t now if any of you plan on studying of preaching through the Gospel of Matthew, but here are my recommended resources for such a study (in the order I have benefitted the most):

  1. John MacArthur’s 4 volumes on the Gospel of Matthew

  2. The Gospel According to Matthew by Leon Morris

  3. William Hendriksen’s commentary on Matthew in The New Testament Commentary set

  4. The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah by Alfred Edersheim

  5. Expository Thoughts on Matthew by J.C. Ryle

  6. D.A. Carson’s commentary on Matthew from The Expositor’s Bible Commentary set

  7. Be Loyal by Warren Wiersbe

  8. The Death of the Messiah (2 vols) by Raymond Brown

  9. The Words and Works of Jesus Christ by J. Dwight Pentecost

  10. The Jesus of the Gospels by Andreas J. Kostenberger
