The Ice Queen. It took me a while to appreciate you. At first, I found you to be unapproachable, even mean. But knowing what you’ve had to deal with in life required you to be defensive. I remember you with respect.
The Eccentric Friend. You were so weird, but you decided to be that on your own terms. You could have been doing that to deal with stress, an experiment to figure out who you were as an individual… who knows. But you made high school fun for all of us. Not only because it was entertaining, but your don’t-care attitude was refreshing amidst a culture where caring too much about what other people think is the norm.

The Nerd-Turned-Cool-Turned-Douche-Turned-Great Person. Knowing what I know now, no one would be able to understand the roller coaster ride of trying to fit in like you experienced. I’m so glad you turned out the way you did. I was worried for a second there…
The Secret crush. I thought you were beautiful enough to be in pictures, but that’s just what made me notice you. What I really fell in love with was your kindness and acceptance of everyone in school. You were unapproachable too, but only because I was convinced that you were completely out of my league (That’s not just an overused movie phrase. It’s a reality to boys in school.). Thank you for being such a wonderful person to me and to everyone.

The Coach. I didn’t get involved in a lot of sports, but that didn’t mean I didn’t have adults who served as valuable coaches to me. Thank you for trying hard and for teaching me valuable lessons.
The Stalker Girl. I was flattered and though we did have some good talks and fun times, this was a real source of stress for me. I hear you’ve found love and a family and I hope all has turned out ok for you.

The Bully. He was more of a bully wannabe. He acted tough and talked even tougher. When he set his sights on me I decided to act. For most it was the lamest fight ever. For me it was pretty epic. (I’ve already told this story 4 years ago. You can find it here.)
Class Clown. Oh man, thank you. Without you we all would have gone insane!
Inspiring Teacher. I think if you knew how many kids you actually inspired and helped make into better people before they entered adulthood, it could possibly get to your head. But then again, you were very level-headed and I’ll never forget the way you changed me ever so subtly.

The Struggling Kid. I remember you well, and I think most of us were you. The other labels (brain, jock, metal head, etc.) were just masks we wore to hide what was going on inside. I hope you made it ok into adulthood. If not, give me a call.
