Mr. Bungle’s self-titled debut album, released in 1991, contains several references to David Lynch’s Blue Velvet (1986), both thematically and musically. While the connections may not be explicit or overt, they are noticeable to fans of Lynch’s work and Mr. Bungle’s layered and eclectic style.

One of these Lynchian references, the line “Don’t you fucking look at me!”, in the song “My Ass Is on Fire”, is a direct reference to Frank Booth, the menacing antagonist played by Dennis Hopper in Blue Velvet (1986). In the film, Frank Booth screams a similar line, “Don’t you fucking look at me!” during a tense and violent scene, embodying his volatile, psychotic nature.

“Love Is a Fist” could also have Frank Booth as a reference. It musically recreates the film’s atmosphere of violence, twisted relationships and the intersection of love and aggression.
