Movie characters who should run for office

Elections will be coming up before you know it in both Canada and the United States. Here are 10 movie characters who, if they were real and could run for Prime Minister, they’d get my vote.

  1. Captain Kidd, (2020) – He’s calm, wise, level-headed, and not afraid to stand up for what’s right and what’s true. He’s also bold in standing up for someone’s welfare, as well as standing up against dangerous ideologies. This #10 entry edged out another Tom Hanks character, which also happens to be another 2020 movie, another “Captain” character for Hanks: Cpt. Krause in .

  2. Robin Hood, (1991) – Steals from the rich and gives to the poor. Now that would be a breath of fresh air today.

  3. Pedro, (2004) – Vote for Pedro.

  4. Annie Porter, (1994) – This may seem like an odd inclusion, but it’s based on one main characteristic: instinct. A speeding bus careening through a busy city is pretty similar to the political landscape in North America right now. Annie’s commandeering of the vehicle, handling of the situation, as well as her ideas to lessen the danger, makes her a great candidate to steer a country.

  5. Brad Pitt, (2014) – Commander Don Collier (aka Wardaddy) is a decisive, tough, and amiable leader. I’d love to have him lead my country. He is even ready to plunge into battle against an enemy all alone in order to save his crew.

  6. Éowyn, (2003) – Maybe only for her kickassery, but I’d still follow Éowyn anywhere she would lead.

  7. Princess Leia Organa, series (1977-83, 2015-19) – I don’t believe I need to explain anything here. All I will say is that Trump would definitely end up not agreeing to shake Leia’s hand. 100% chance.

  8. Commissioner Gordon, (2008) – He’s so smart, so dedicated to his job, and like Annie Porter, has excellent instinctive abilities. Maybe Batman could be his running mate.

  9. Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), , Marvel series (2011-19) – Unwavering commitment to principles, unbroken readiness to fight evil, strong ability to lead: all things that are mostly absent in a politician. They are also all part of Steve Rogers’ daily life.

  10. Hermione Granger, (2001-2011) – Clever, smart, highly skilled to the point of making difficult things look easy, including taking on a seemingly omnipotent dark lord. In this list, no one can beat the potential of Hermoine to lead a country!

And now, 7 movie characters who seem to portray what real politicians are like:

  1. Donald P. Sinclair, (2001, John Cleese) – Has lots of money and likes to play with it, unconcerned with people’s welfare.

  2. David, (1987, Kiefer Sutherland) – An evil bloodsucking trickster. Maybe I’m laying this on a little thick…

  3. Rosemary Woodhouse, (1968) – Gives birth to the Devil’s child. Yeah, too thick, I agree.

  4. Inspector Clouseau, series (1963-2009) – He’s certain he’s got everything under control. But…

  5. Lots-O Bear, (2012) – Watch this movie and tell me he doesn’t accurately resemble a senator from the deep south of the US who fights to keep things the way they are, corruption and all. I’m tellin’ ya, do it. You’ll see!

  6. Holly Golightly, (1961) – A little flighty, daydreams of buying expensive things.

  7. Audrey 2, Little Shop of Horrors (1986) – A plant that appears to be cute and charming, but gets bigger, louder, and more dangerous the longer it lives (or stays in power?).

Congratulations This is your week. And yes, I would totally vote for Charlotte Field.

Best Actress:

Meryl Streep as Kay Graham in

Best Actor: Eddie Murphy as Rudy in

Best Quote: “I’ve never been so scared in my entire life. And I was in an elevator with Saddam Hussein.” – Charlize Theron as Charlotte in

And my favourite movies that center around an election (I didn’t include Napoleon Dynamite since it was just a high school election.):

  1. The American President (1995)

  2. Dave (1993)

  3. Irresistible (2020)

  4. In the Line of Fire (1993)

  5. The Great Hack (2019)

  6. Milk (2008)

  7. Long Shot (2019)

  8. Black Sheep (1996)
