More Top Lamb BBQ in DC
I’ve been on the lookout for excellent lamb barbecue since I saw Daniel Vaughn’s Texas Monthly review of the lamb at B. Cooper in Austin. I found some at the Silver and Sons food truck in Montgomery County, and most recently saw lamb on the Specials menu at 2fifty Texas BBQ in Riverdale Park. I missed a couple of opportunities due to travel to Florida and South Carolina, but finally, the stars aligned.
I pre-ordered a half pound and headed to 2fifty. I found out at the last minute that Doug Jacobson, the Kansas City Barbecue Maven, was available for lunch, so when I got there I added a couple of sausages to my haul. I returned home, and voila, the lamb

and the sausages.

The lamb came with blue corn masa tortillas, pickled onions, and chopped cilantro. The lamb was delicious, tender, smoky, and succulent. The tortillas suffered a bit from the trip home, but the lamb came through with flying colors. The onion and cilantro were very nice with the lamb, the onion providing some sharp flavor to offset the rich lamb, and the cilantro adding a layer of favor.
And the sausages were, as always at 2fifty, outstanding. One was a jalapeño and cheese sausage, a great combination. It had good heat (and flavor) from the jalapeño, nicely balanced by the cheese, all enhanced by thoughtful seasoning. The same care characterized the poblano sausages which, if anything, tasted even better than the jalapeño cheese.
Yet another treat from 2fifty. We now have two local places, with Silver and Sons, for top notch smoked lamb and, as it happens, great pastrami in both locations. Things are hopping in the Washington area. Give them both a try, and let me know of other meats that are smoked low and slow at places in the area.
