More Oil Pastel Fun & Exploration!
I friends! I have really been digging oil pastels lately!

I have really enjoyed experimenting with oil pastels on different surfaces and with different methods of sealing them. I wanted to get a more oil-painting-like effect so I prepared a cardled wood painting panel for today’s painting. I primed it black and then applied 2 coats of Liquitex clear gesso for grit. I am currently working on varnishing this painting for long-term durability and I will update you on that after everything is dry.
Supplies (affiliate links used)
Davinci Pro Birch panel 11″x14″: single also available in multi-packs which cuts the per panel price in half. Or try this cheaper brand in a 5-pack. *clip the coupon! *Blick has panels too in open stock.
Pastels-You will want some hard, medium, and very soft to layer. My recommendations are below, I have not tried all brands so if you have recommendations please share than in the comments.
Hard: Pentel: Cheapest on Blick also on Amazon
Medium: Kuelox or Mungyo Gallery Soft oil pastel: Blick and on Amazon
Super soft: Paul Rubens Haiya or Sennelier: Blick or Amazon
Workable fixative for sealing between layers: Blick or Amazon
The Sennelier fixative adds a depth of color and richness to the painting. The first photo in the blog post was before fixative. The following photo is after 3 coats of fixative. As I mentioned earlier I will update you on the varnishing process of this painting. I hope I can achieve a solid and protective finish so I can feel empowered to paint more with oil pastels. If you have any recommendations of varnish to use over oil pastel please let me know in the comments and if you know anyone who might enjoy this please share this post. Happy crafting!
