Money Is Not a Savior
“Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death” (Proverbs 11:4).
There is a character in the movie 2012 who is a Russian billionaire who buys his way onto a rescue ship before a great asteroid strikes earth. It is clear he believes his monetary resources are the reason for his salvation and he gloats in what he has by bringing his fancy sports cars, mink coats, and supermodel girlfriend with him onto this rescue ship.
One of the common misconceptions about money is that is answers all your problems. If you have an overdue bill that is the amount of $211.10, acquiring that exact amount may pay the bill, but does it address the reason the bill was overdue in the first place? Not necessarily.
What if you are regularly encountering overdue bills because you needlessly spend money on non-essentials (e.g., eating out 3 meals a day, buying fancy gadgets, etc.)?
Unwise spenders or savers often get themselves into financial trouble or ruin because they aren’t good stewards of what God provides. It is rare to have such financial trouble, because we don’t have enough money.
The issue is always the heart.
Money does not solve your problems. It is like putting a band aid on a deep cut that needs stitches. It may block the sight of blood for a while, but eventually the real problem of needing your skin sewed back together is going to become obvious when the band aid is soaked in your own blood.
Money should not be our sufficiency of identity. This is one of the reasons that Paul so clearly stated, “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils” (I Timothy 6:10).
You want true satisfaction? You want ultimate fulfillment? Discover it not in the resources of the world (aka money) but in the resources from above (righteous living).
