Milwaukee, Winter 2022

Hi, a quick update. Have been keeping busy with the steady hum of life, kids classes and after-school clubs and night classes and blah-dee-dah. Also some hard kicks in the pants (I’ll maybe blog about those too, just gimme a little time to catch my breath first).

Also, and this comes with a disclaimer that of all of us are relatively well and healthy, nothing serious it’s mostly minor things and a lot of post-COVID catch up, but LORD HAVE MERCY WE HAVE SEVERAL DOCTOR APPOINTMENTS EVERY WEEK. Last week we had 8 ortho/dental/doctor appointments, one of which involved FOUR HOURS of testing; this week by contrast is light, with only 4 appointments (one being oral surgery).

Anyway. It’s finally warming up around here, and with the thaw and flowers finally emerging, I got the urge to sort though a few months of photos and to give this blog a good dusting.

We went to Milwaukee in… January? February? It was your usual icy, brutally cold kinda weekend but we were stir-crazy and there was a new T-rex exhibit at the Milwaukee Public Museum, so off we went. I took only my Holga lens, so Holga images is what you’re gonna get.

(A note on the shirt Moose is wearing below, I’m awfully proud of that find – true vintage 80s Return of the Jedi shirt, plucked from the depths of a huge pile assorted donated kids clothing in a school cafeteria. God bless those Catholic school rummage sales. Score of a lifetime, cost me a whole seventy-five cents, baby.)

The eye sockets on the dude below, could not stop laughing.

Hit up a few of our favorite exhibits before leaving.

I love my cheap, ill-fitting Holga lens, I’ve been keeping it on my camera more often than not these days. I’m an old-school manual shooter, but admit I usually still auto-focus (switching settings and framing shots with active kids is hard enough). But with the Holga, it’s lightly screwed in at best so you need to hold it while using it, every gear requires manual precision, and it also makes the viewfinder so dark that focusing takes some real concentration. It’s still a lot of fun, though, I like the challenge.

I added another camera to the mix! I initially bought it as something fun for the kids but after that first shot below I decided it was instead an early Mother’s Day gift for myself, sorrrrrrry boysssss… I’m slowly hoarding film for our Route 66 trip already.

That’s it for now! I have a few more posts to hopefully get up in the coming weeks, although I can’t promise anything (May is a busy month at work, lots of conferences and we host an Editorial Conference; in addition: we leave for California at the end of the month). If I don’t update again, have a great May. Summer is right around the corner, huzzah! MAMA IS READY FOR A SUNNY PATIO OVERLOOKING A LAKE WITH A MARGARITA IN HAND YES MA’AM.
