Imagine pitching a story about a giant gorilla to a film studio. Yeah, everyone probably went “Oh, like King Kong?”
So how is ‘Mighty Joe Young’ different to King Kong and what would make you want to watch it? The chemistry between the gorilla and Jill Young (Charlize Theron) was rather sweet. This is a beautiful story of a bond between a human and primate. I suppose one could view this as a tame version of King Kong, which would appeal more to a family orientated demographic – for young and old to enjoy.
The visuals must have been really awesome at the time of release. The film offers lots of action and adventure, and even some suspense and humoristic moments. Charlize is so good in the role of Jill, and also really gorgeous.
‘Mighty Joe Young’ is such a special movie with a believable story that its hard not to be entertained. The protagonist was also well setup and there’s a satisfying payoff. It’s amazing how the film’s mood changes in an instant – from lighthearted to dramatic. The action sequences are really well done. There’s also a great climax.
‘Mighty Joe Young’ received an Oscar nomination for Best Visual Effects. Charlize Theron received a Best Actress nomination and the film also won Best Feature Film.
Would I watch it again? Yes.
