Mid-August Update
We are about to pick over our Discovery apples to select the ripest and most edible friuits. The sweetest can be spotted by having red skin right up to the eye – a green circle indicates that the core has not ripened yet so a nasty shock when munching!
Many apples have almost stopped growing, even with all the rain we have had, they started off struggling with the low temperatures and that impairment will influence how they grow until maturity. Some trees have made very little growth .
The one fruit which appears to be unscathed by the weather experiences of this season are the Medlars. These are usually picked late in October.
Strangely wasps and hornets are not to be seen… yet!
