To celebrate the wonderful occasion of my blog anniversary, I’m sharing with you all my delicious recipe of a popular traditional Mexican drink on a hot day 😀

Horchata, a cinnamon-infused rice water drink 😀

It is one of many aguas frescas (literally, fresh water) prepared in Mexican homes 😀

So here goes the recipe…

Ingredients

1 cup rice 2 cups hot water 1 cinnamon stick 1/2 cup hot whole milk 1/2 cup sugar 1 tsp ground cinnamon Ice cubes

Directions

In a bowl, add rice, milk, sugar and cinnamon stick. Pour hot water into it and stir well. Let it cool and then refrigerate for 10-12 hours. Remove the cinnamon stick. Pour the mixture in a blender and process until the rice is finely ground. Strain and grind any bits of rice remaining. Pour it into a jar and refrigerate. If the mix is too thick, add cold water accordingly. Stir and serve over ice with a sprinkle of powdered cinnamon.

This drink can stay for two days in the refrigerator. It serves 5-6 persons.

Variations

Vegans can substitute unsweetened, unflavoured almond milk for whole milk.

Stevia can be used instead of sugar.

To make fruit horchata, while blending the soaked rice, add a cup of any sliced fruit. No need to add sugar if the fruit is sweet. You may use mango, orange, strawberries, etc…

To make horchata with protein powder, add a scoop of any flavoured protein powder while blending the soaked rice. Do not add sugar.

To make an alcoholic beverage, add a splash of Kahlua or half a shot of rum or vodka to each glass of horchata.

So guys, hope you loved this delicious and easy summer drink recipe 😀 Try it out soon, if not today… and let me know 😀  Cheers 😀
