“The Bible is not a book which tells us what we’ve got to do to put ourselves right. The Bible is not a book with just an appeal to us to do this, that, or the other – to accept certain ideas and put them into practice. It’s not a book teaching morality or ethics or anything else. I’ll tell you what it is – it’s not a book, I say, that, asks us primarily to do anything – it’ a great announcement of what God has done! It’s God acting! It’s the God who comes into the Garden, to man in his utter hopelessness. What if He hadn’t done that? I’d have no gospel, there’d be no light. The world would be in darkness at this moment. There’d be nothing to say, there’d be no hope. But God has come, and God has spoken, and He’s revealed a plan and a programme. It’s revelation, my friends! It isn’t what man thinks; it isn’t what man aspires after. It isn’t what man proposes. It is entirely from God. It’s God announcing His programme, revealing it. I know nothing about it apart from this Book.”
