March Update

Mar 5, 2014
1 min read

Any traditional winter weather has been swamped by contributions from the mid Atlantic and beyond. The tail end of February has perked up our morale, and certainly that of both earthworms and ladybirds, for the moment. Our drains continue to flow readily, and well they must as the land here is still soft just to walk over.

There have been a few hours of opportunity to pop in garlic and onion sets, prepare for next sowings and when the wind has dropped, replace some gale damaged glass prior to establishing climbing french beans inside – in only just over a month’s time. The spring greens are all that remain in the veg line and soon they will finish. We expect to increase the volume of veg for this season in response to your requests. Patience will now be required until a finished product is available.

The apples are tiring now, though we still have some here at the farm for local purchasers. The very late picked varieties suffered from hail and high winds prior to picking.

The apple juice will be available even after the apples themselves have finished. A fifth batch has just been pressed.

Andrew has recently spoken on apple growing to the Newtown garden club in Colchester.

Now back to pruning!
