Life Update & Future Blog Posts
Well hi there! That was a little longer of a break between posts than I anticipated, but here I am! In my last post I recapped what Mac & I got up to this summer, but I figured since it’s autumn now (whaaaatt??!?), it was time for another life update. Despite our summer weekends being fairly busy, our weekdays were a little more low key. We spent the majority of our nights (and days!) at Mac’s parent’s house in his childhood bedroom (in what is probably the comfiest bed known to man).
Housing
Much of August was spent looking for a place to live and applying to jobs in the Burlington/Hamilton-area. We didn’t make apartment hunting a huge priority when we first came home which we ended up kicking ourselves for as it became increasingly frustrating as the weeks wore on. Luckily, we found a place that had just finished being renovated and was available ASAP! We jumped on submitting an application and after an agonizingly long weekend, we were approved!! We’ve since completely emptied our storage unit and have moved in to the new place and are spending our spare time going through endless boxes of stuff. But, things are good and it’s nice to finally have a place of our own again! AND a kitchen!!! I’ve been cooking up a storm in there! It’s smaller than any kitchen I’ve cooked in before, so it’s taking some getting used to! But I’m so happy to have my own cupboards and spice rack (and blender & food processor!) again that I barely even notice the tiny amount of counter space… barely.
Jobs
This is probably one of the most frequently asked questions since we’ve been home – “so, what are you doing now??!”. Well, dear reader, both Mac & I have done a complete 180 in our career choices! Coming home to a fresh slate meant that we could find jobs in a line of work that we’re passionate about. For Mac, that’s outdoorsy stuff – so he’s working at an outdoor retailer as well as helping out at a local climbing wall. He’s loving it so far and it’s been awesome for me to see how happy all of this work is making him.
As for me, it probably comes as no surprise to anyone that I ended up getting a job in the food industry. To be more specific, I’m working at a plant-based restaurant doing everything from serving, dish washing, and cooking on the line. It’s been quite the learning curve so far, but it’s also been so much fun and I’m really happy there.
Both of our new jobs are totally different from our former lives as engineers, and while they may not be forever jobs, we’re both really enjoying these new roles so far.
What’s Next
Now that everything has somewhat slowed down from our turbo-paced summer, Mac & I are settling into a normal-ish routine. You’ve probably noticed my posting frequency has gone wayyyyyy down these past few months (oh, you haven’t noticed??…well, this is awkward…). We don’t have any travel plans on the horizon, but I really enjoyed blogging while travelling and am hoping to continue to do so now. Obviously, moving forward, the blog content will be quite different as we’re now stationary instead of wandering nomads. I haven’t quite decided what my main focus will be, but it will probably definitely involve food in some way or another (are you really that surprised?). If that’s not your jam, I totally get it! If you don’t want to keep receiving emails every time I publish a new post, just click the little unsubscribe link in the email content.
For those of you that have followed this blog since the beginning of Mac’s & my trip almost 2 (TWO?!) years ago, thank you so much! I loved reading the comments some of you left & it made me happy to share some of the incredible beauty of the places we visited with others. We’re definitely not done travelling, so when the time comes for a new adventure, I’ll you can bet I’ll be sharing it here!
If you are interested in maybe seeing what I get up to in the kitchen & in life as I move towards a more minimalist & natural lifestyle, or reading about interesting articles/businesses I find noteworthy, I hope you’ll stick around! Aside from travelling, I’m incredibly passionate about food & cooking and I love sharing new recipes & techniques (and food!) with others.
