League of Legends Worlds 2024 What to Expect from the LCS
S. Samek
The League of Legends World Championship 204 is ready to begin. Let’s meet the qualifying teams and draw up some expectations as to how the region will perform. We start this series with the LCS.
Our first team is the three seed from the LCS 100 Thieves. They are returning to Worlds for the first time sense 2022. They finished tied for last in group D with a 1-5 record that year.
This is their fourth trip to worlds, and they never have played in the play-in stage. They also have never made it to the quarterfinals. The first step for this team should be to make it out of the play-in stage on to the main draw before they try to see if they can make it out of the Swiss stage.
The open up the play-in stage against MovistarR7.
Team Liquid earned the number two seed for the LCS. They last made worlds in 2023 where they went 0-3 in the Swiss stage.
The best Team Liquid performance at worlds was in the 9th-12th place range which they did during the 2018, 2019 and 2020 tournaments. Though this season Team Liquid did make a run to the semi-finals at the 2024 Esports World Cup before losing 2-1 to T1.
Team Liquid is looking to build on that success heading into Worlds, despite falling to win the LCS title this summer.
The top seed from the LCS is FlyQuest. After finally breaking through to win an LCS title they earn the number one spot from the region in the Swiss stage.
The last time they made it to worlds was in 2020, where they finished 3-3 and in third place in group D. This allowed them to finish in the 9th-12th place spot.
The did earn a spot to MSI in 2024, where they went 1-2 with a win over PSG Talon to start the tournament, before losing to T1 and PSG Talon to end their run-in 9th/10th place.
I think success for the LCS would have a team make the quarterfinals. It hasn’t been sense worlds 2018 when Cloud9 made the semi-finals that an LCS team has made it past the quarterfinals. It’s not guaranteed that they get a team to the quarterfinals, but I’m sure one of the three will at least be close and fighting for a spot in the 9th-12 place range.
