In our next post in the 2024 worlds expectations series we move to the host region Europe, the LEC. Can they defend their home turf and bring home a world championship?

The third seed to qualify from the LEC is Mad Lions KOI. They last went to worlds in 2023 where they finished 1-3 and in 12th-14th place. This time they will have to go through the play-in stage. They face Vikings Esports in their opening match.

The second seed from the LEC is Fnatic. They last made worlds in 2023 where they finished in 9-11th place missing out on the quarterfinals. In fact, they haven’t made it to the quarterfinal round sense 2020.

Outside of their season one world championship, the closest Fnatic has gotten to a second title is in 2018 where they were runner up to Invictus Gaming. So will they be able to surprise some people, or will the streak of getting out of the Swiss stage see another year added too it?

The final team from the LEC is top seed G2. G2 last made worlds in 2023 where they also finished in 9th-11 place. Their highest finish at worlds was in 2019 where they were runners up to FunPlus Phoenix.

Recently G2 made it to the semi-finals at both MSI and the 2024 Esports World Cup. Showing that this team isn’t one to be messed with on not just the LEC stage, but internationally.

I expect the LEC to put on a good show for the home crowd. Will it be enough to produce another world champion? Probably not.

Mad Lions KOI should be a favorite to get through the play-in stage, but probably won’t make it much further than that. G2 and Fnatic could make runs, but the ceiling is probably a surprise semi-final spot. Though both should be in the mix for a spot in the quarterfinals.
