Krull (1983)

Director: Peter Yates
Starring: Ken Marshall, Lysette Anthony, Freddie Jones
A prince and a fellowship of companions set out to rescue his bride from a fortress of alien invaders who have arrived on their home planet.
How did I ever miss this film? Although visual effects have come a long way and the effects are clearly dated, ‘Krull’ is a masterpiece on so many levels.
Apparently 23 huge sets were built for ‘Krull’, and it was shot on 10 different sound stages. The entire production was a massive undertaking. There were loads of extras, shot on location, great costumes and make-up, and practical effects. The result is an incredible action adventure that never gets boring. There’s also a very nice romantic element to the film. ‘Krull’ must have looked really amazing back then.
The trailer doesn’t do the film justice. It is much better, and a film I thoroughly enjoyed. The action was thrilling, and the humor funny. And then there’s Ken Marshall as the film’s hero, Colwyn – indeed a sexy motherfluffer in those tights!
This is a wonderful fantasy fairytale to enjoy again and again.
‘Krull’ was nominated for Best Fantasy Film, Best Music, and Best Costumes.
Would I watch it again? Yes.
