Krampus (2015)

Director: Michael Dougherty

Starring: Adam Scott, Emjay Anthony, Toni Collette

A boy who has a bad Christmas ends up accidentally summoning a festive demon to his family home.

It’s amazing how quickly the film turned from a humorous introduction to downright terrifying, with great visuals. The introduction gave us a good opportunity to get to know the characters, and relate to them.

Adam Scott and Toni Collette star as husband and wife Tom and Sarah, who went to great lengths to prepare a Christmas celebration for Sarah’s sister and family. They don’t really get along, and – as we discover – the film has an underlying message to keep the Christmas spirit alive.

With constant quarrel among the family members and very little Christmas spirit, Krampus pays them a visit, and all hell is about to break loose as Christmas becomes a quest for survival for the family. Krampus is a terrifying creature, and the film is atmospheric. Despite the film’s strong horror elements, it manages to remain lighthearted, and the genres blend surprisingly well.

I really liked the unpredictability of the film.

‘Krampus’ won for Best Make-Up, Best Special Effects, Best Director, Best Horror Movie.
