Kleopas is a Greek musician and singer who combines traditional music with the ancient lyre and tries to produce emotion-provoking music. He performed in the past in churches, schools with kids with special needs, museums, and even fashion shows such as Dolce & Gabbana summer show in Milan.

His full name is Kleopas Giannou (Κλεόπας Γιαννού), and he creates deeply emotional music by combining traditional Greek elements with the ancient lyre. His work draws from Greek folk modes, Byzantine music, and ancient classical traditions, all of which are rich in emotion and spiritual depth.

The elegiac feeling in his music comes from several sources. First, the lyre itself has a haunting, delicate sound that naturally evokes feelings of nostalgia and sorrow. Historically, it was connected to myths, poetry, and mourning—played in rituals, laments, and sacred contexts.

Second, the musical modes Kleopas uses often emphasize minor tonalities and slow, meditative melodies. These are typical of Greek folk and Byzantine music, both of which carry strong themes of loss, exile, longing, and spiritual reflection.

Third, there’s a strong tradition in Greek culture of music as a way to express grief, memory, and catharsis. From ancient laments to modern rebetiko, the Greek musical landscape has always allowed for deep emotional expression. Kleopas taps into this tradition, not just to revive it, but to make it feel alive and relevant today.

Kleopas has spoken about his goal of using music to “awaken the soul.” His compositions aim not to impress with complexity but to move the listener, to open an emotional space that feels sacred and timeless. That’s why his music feels so elegiac—it touches something ancient, intimate, and profoundly human.

His music is so beautiful it hurts the soul. The pain it evokes isn’t harsh—it’s tender, like the ache of longing, of remembering something sacred that you didn’t know you had forgotten. That’s the power of the lyre in his hands: not just an instrument, but a vessel of grief, beauty, and soulfulness. When music hurts the soul in that way, it’s because it reveals something true—something we carry quietly within us, perhaps from centuries past.

Kleopa’s music isn’t just aesthetically pleasing; it strikes something deeper, something almost ancestral. It feels like a whisper from another time, a memory you never lived but somehow recognize.
