Ken Ramey, On What It Means to Listen to God

“The word ‘hearers’ was used by the Greeks to describe someone who attended a lecture but was not a disciple of the lecturer. In our day, this would be equivalent to someone auditing a class. Those were my favorite classes in college because they were so easy. You could go to class and write down all the information, but you didn’t have to do any homework or take any tests. I think some people attend church every Sunday like they are auditing a class. They take notes on the sermon and tell the preacher what a good sermon it was on the way out, but they never do anything with that they learn after they leave church. What they fail to realize is that the sermon actually starts after it is over.” (Expository Listening, pg. 97)
