Junseo Deckard Staying in Central PA; Commits to Juniata Football
Junseo Deckard may be new to football, but it didn’t stop him from committing to play in college for the Juniata College Eagles. The Cambria Heights senior will be staying close to home and hopes to tailor his skills even more before heading to college come July.
With just six months of kicking experience, Deckard has connected on field goals in practice from beyond 50 yards. While distance is one area he wants to grow in, his biggest goal is to improve his in-game accuracy from the 30-50 yard range.
Having a soccer background has helped the Cambria County native in his transition to football. His athletic accolades leaving high school include winning six Player of the Week awards from the Altoona Mirror, a Renda Media All-Star nod, a First-Team selection by Mainline All-Defense Team, an Altoona Mirror Football All-Star Honorable Mention, and the Heritage Conference points and kickoff yardage leader in 2022.
To become a better kicker, Deckard credits Zech Scott, the kicker before him at Cambria Heights, for helping him platoon his skills and have a successful senior season. He is also thankful for his teammates, coaches, friends, and community members who supported him every Friday night. Most importantly, his parents have been supportive of his new found passion in kicking and in his decision to become a Juniata Eagle and his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ had kept him healthy and well enough to continue pushing his limits as an athlete.
Some of his favorite football memories so far include nailing two field goals against West Shamokin after starting the game with a doinked point-after try. “All our football fans called a field goal and Coach Lewis called a field goal and I made it. After that field goal I got the confidence and I made another 31 yard field goal.”
While it’s been a short run so far, there may be big things in store for the soon to be Juniata Eagle. All it takes to get good at something is to find a way to dedicate time towards it every single day; exactly what Deckard is doing to make sure he’s a ready kicker come late summer.
